Non-DLC Challenge
There is also a challenge running for those who do not have (or are not using) the Emperor's Challenge DLC here: Challenge #72 (Non-DLC): Disguised Diplomacy. This is a rerun of Challenge 21 (same name) to introduce newer players to the Challenge mechanics without forcing the DLC on them; and to give old players a chance to try the new and updated RE:IS experience in an old challenge setting.

Please note that only one submission in either challenge will be put forwards for this week - you cannot get MP or medals from both.

Pinkerton examined the map on his desk. In particular, the area of it that had a magnifying glass positioned on it - which highlighted an area full of small islands, all of which were marked with a '?'. Beside them, a letter that had been scrawled with a sloppy hand and runny ink - or rather, a form: Bobo The Misadventurous's last expedition plan.

He glared at the two papers as if they had affronted his honour, then huffed and headed for the main hall. His stride was purposeful and his eyes fixed ahead of him as he chewed the tip of his moustache.

The Explorers he passed quickly recognised that something was going on, and before long, news spread: Pinkerton was up to something.

On reaching the main hall, Pinkerton went over the list of expeditions that had been certified as legitimate for the Explorers, looked at it for a long moment, then reached for a pen.

In the tense silence from the Explorers, you could hear the intake of breath as he carefully added another to the list.

'Explorers!' cried out Pinkerton, startling them somewhat.

'The revered Emperor Guangxu has informed us of a series of Indonesian islands that, to this day, remain unexplored. We cannot allow the place to remain unknown - everyone must investigate the area and report back in full!'

He hesitated, then added '-and of course, we should probably find Bobo too.'

Anna's face, previously delighted at the sound of new places to explore, turned back into her nominal frown. 'Bobo? Really? The man's a joke-'

'The word's 'clown',' muttered Hatice; 'but what kind of trouble has he got himself into this time? Last time I had to help him we had to run six miles to escape the lions he'd been making faces at!'

'How about the time those wolves chased him up a tree - he only managed to stay up there by tieing his breeches around the branch. It took hours untangling them to get him down!' Added Agatha, a disapproving look on her face.

'Auww, come on, Bobo's a great guy - once, I saw him do this amazing monkey imitation - we were all laughing so hard, only then a
real monkey saw it and chased him round the whole island - the man's a comedy genius - he hit every pitfall like clockwork; but still managed to get away in the end!' Jan-Piet chipped in.

'Enough!' shouted PInkerton. 'He's a Renowned Explorer, the same as all of you, so we have a duty to find out what happened to him - and to Explore the Archipelago while we're at it. And anyone who does their personal best there will have earned a place on this year's records!'

The Explorers cheered - any excuse for exploring was usually good enough, even if some had misgivings about Bobo. And besides, how much trouble could he
really have gotten into?

  • You must go to the Anagogic Archipelago as one of your expeditions.
  • The top-scorer for each different captain will earn a platinum medal (provided they beat at least the Gold Medal requirements)
  • You must play on Adventure mode.
  • You may play on 'Most Renowned Explorer' or 'Emperor's Challenge' mode, but only the Renown will count towards this Challenge - make sure your submission picture is of the Win-screen, not the Porcelain Points if playing in Emperor's Challenge mode.

There is due to be a content update at some point during this challenge - this may affect how you choose to play this challenge before/after the update - please bear this in mind.

Expeditions taken after the patch are more likely to score higher. You were warned.

**As of May 18th, the patch and new content has arrived and is active on Steam. GoG version still pending**

Your score is your renown.
  • BRONZE: 2500 renown (1MP*)
  • SILVER: 5500 renown (2MP*)
  • GOLD: 9500 renown (3MP*)
  • PLATINUM: Be the top-scoring player with your Captain and over 9500 renown (3MP+**)
* Number of medal points awarded when playing on Classic Difficulty. Easy and Normal give less, according to these rules.
Gold and Platinum medals may only be achieved without losing, though Silver and Bronze are still possible to get with just the Record sheet for that trip.
** The platinum medal is extraordinary and can only be achieved on Classic or Impossible difficulty without losing. It doesn't increase Medal Points further than a Gold medal, but we will track how many you have.

The Chairman's Suggestions
(The challenge organisers may be experimenting with a set of recommendations to assist newer explorers at times)
Each week, Pinkerton has some advice for Explorers relating to the challenge - if you want, this advice can offer good approaches or strategies to approach the challenge with - but they are not the only way to succeed or any given challenge - it is worth trying other approaches too, or using these as a basic idea to build from.
Anagogic skills advice: Pinkerton recommends preparing for Anagogic Archipelago by taking Tacticians, Survivalists, Rogues and Archaeologists to a reasonable level (those you take would ideally be at least level 4 by the expedition)

Attitude: Friendly or Aggressive attitude.

Resources: You are likely to find Gold and Status there.

More in-depth Anagogic advice: When you go to the Archipelago, go prepared -
the skill checks here are punishing if you lack the skills. Survivalist isn't much more common than the other checks, but it will solely fund your supplies, so it's probably a slightly higher priority.

Then there's the Stupa. For the maximum amount of treasures (and therefore, in most cases, the most renown), you want to put two stupa to one colour and two to another colour. Bear in mind though that 3 stupa to one colour gives your entire crew a perk - worth bearing in mind for some builds.

Also: use your Treasure Guide. It's invaluable.

How to participate
You can participate with a highscore, a story or both.

Write a story. Use the Challenge theme as an inspiration by looking at the constraints. Find other stories in the Fan Story directory or by looking at previous challenges.
Post your story in a new topic in these forums.
Also link to it to this thread with a comment: Include the first paragraph/few lines of your story in the post here to show readers what your story is about.

Play the game according to the challenge rules and in Adventure mode.
Post in this topic a screenshot of your Win Screen*, right after the ceremony or your Leaderboard record.* Also include a text version of your score with the submission to allow for error checking.
Submit by 12:00 noon CEST, 24/05/17 (Or 05/24/17 for those using MM/DD/YY)
(click here for your local time equivalent [])
NOTE: Only one score will be accepted - only one submission for each player please. If you wish to enter a new score, please edit your initial entry and make it clear which score you are submitting, and add the word "EditGreenlight" to the entry so we can see immediately when the result needs updating.
*If you forget to screenshot the Win screen, you can also enter with a screenshot of your Leaderboards: Go to Main Menu > Leaderboards > Local > click the entry that matches your submission game > screenshot those details.

Remember - you must go via the Anagogic Archipelago for your submission to remain valid!

Game Version
Build must be 449+.

Story ideas:
What other misadventures has Bobo been on with the Explorers? What did he do to get himself stuck this time? What treasures lurk in the Anagogic Archipelago? Lastly... why does everyone going there come back with so many mugs?

I won't be taking part in this myself (because if I was, I'd be submitting Min-Joeng's massive score)

Oh, and I wouldn't recommend Phailin for plat attempts. I suspect there'll be a rush on her :P

Pretty inventive way to keep everyone from picking certain captains and facerolling their way to Platinum without outright banning them. I also still need a couple of captain+ achievements, so this is right up my alley.

Heh. This is the time the monks have to 'balance' them a bit ;)

(Don't expect miracles)

I had an urge to do proper phalin run so I may as well do it now... and hope Liort picks someone else ;)

Of course, I got probably the worst possible treasure from the last expedition but still not bad result.

Might as well submit the run I did while looking for the final treasure I need - I seriously hate the yeti with a passion, the guy never appears on my friendly runs. :(
It's fairly close to my Viktor high score anyway.

Can you use runs you completed before the contest was issued?
Because I finished a nice run tuesday with jan-piet that seems to fit the requirements for this challenge.
9872 renown should be good for gold.

You can so long as the build is within the boundaries set - which yours is, so all is good :)

Here's my updated entry. Good enough for gold, and maybe even a platinum!!! This is my highest scoring run to date, and it will be my first ever weekly challenge gold medal!

And just like that, all the salt is washed away :D

Total: 10,309 Renown!

Captain Hojo led an all-DLC character crew through the Anagogic Archipelago and beyond, netting a very respectable 9458 Renown (my highest score to date)! The game was played on Classic difficulty and Adventure Mode, as always.

I was SO CLOSE to Gold this time, yet still it eludes me. Possibly I could have done better if I had waited until after the latest update to do this run, or if I had invested in more speech defense items before going to the Archipelago, or if I had used just a tiny bit more insight for status to get more helpers, or if the damned Yeti event nodes weren't spread across the entire map....
