And yeah the gifting cycle is a good way.
It was 10% off. Sure it wasn't on the expected 30-60% off during a big sale, but it DID already go on sale on Steam. In fact I think it's happened twice now.
Personally I just downloaded the game for free because I saw one of the mods call somebody a leech a few years ago for asking for a sale and didn't want to support that mentality.
You objected to a mod calling someone a leech, so you decided the appropriate response was to be a leech.
