It really doesn't though. The only way sexual orienation would add to gameplay is if babies and children existed as it would put a value on straight couples and gay couples for population control reasons.
That's not true. There were gay and bisexual characters in the game long before there was a minor controversy caused by one blogger over the coding of the bisexuality trait. It sounds like you're trying to make something political that isn't.
I guess, but the thing is nothing is added to your colony based on the colonists sexual orienation. Many of the traits have plus and minuses, but sexual orienation is just kind of there and serves no purpose. It's like it was added for no other reason than to appease the LGBT community.
It adds to the complexity of the interpersonal dynamics of the colonists. In other words, it adds drama. This seems pretty obvious. I'm guessing you're overlooking this obvious gameplay effect for some reason?
Just having straight relationships would add that kind of drama, so again, it serves no point.
