You need the research but trust me, It's so underwhelming. It gives around 20-30 metal for each slag and takes enormous amounts of power while doing so. Just digging around in a nearby mountain will probably net you more metal while leveling your colonist's mining.

Ignoring the fact you necro'd an old thread for apparently no reason... You are aware every machine has a power toggle built into it right? You don't need a power switch, just select the machine and click on "designate power toggle" and a pawn will come along and turn the machine off. You use power switches to turn a large number of machines on or off at once (like turrets) or to seperate battery banks from your grid to protect them from being drained.
