Steam Achievements
Hi,
The title say's it all really, I was hoping to hear if Rimworld is getting Steam Achievements from one of it's Game Developers:riddle:

I'm not interested in speculation or the pro's and con's of Achievements, I just want to find out if they are coming to Rimworld, Cheers. :SpRad_ThumbsUp:

Tynan has stated he doesn't care about achievements and has no plans on adding them.

I've always found them pointless myself, but some people seem to think they're special so whatever.
I thought creating and trying to sell a game is about making it so other people want to buy it, A games developer not adding Steam Achievements because he doesn't care for them seems to be a backwards way of looking at it as he's not the target audience, He should be trying to maximse sales,
It's no big deal though, there's plenty of other games out there. Bye.

Achievments would be easy to cheese with mods. You can come up with your own achievments and challenges. I don't see a problem with game not having achievments, this does not affect gameplay. If you need a carrot to chase to enjoy the game, I feel sorry, you are definetely missing out. Bye

Sales are already maximised and well beyond the dev's expectations.
If you had done your homework, you would have understood why. The dev has previously explained his reasons for not including them and these are sensible.

what are the reasons?

He doesn't want people to feel like they need to play the game a certain way or do specific things to hit the achievements. The game is about creating your own stories, not about trying to tick generic goals off a checklist.

If you are going to reply to the post I made two years ago, you could at least have read the post I made detailing his reasoning back in May of the same year o.O

Very unlikely.

Here's the design rationale: The experience of RimWorld isn't really supposed to be about fighting and winning against the game. It's not a competition or skill-test, primarily. It's about story experience. Achievements get in the way of that by focusing people's attention on some arbitrary task. I'd rather people set their own goals and experience the story as it emerges.

That and they're not essential and I'm far overloaded as is.

Likely for the same reason other open-ended games have begun to abandon achievements and linear quests, it kills creativity and curiosity in players. Games like Don't Starve tried them out and invariably players followed them then considered themselves done with the game once they got the achievements or finished the hand-holdy step by step guides. The overjustification effect led to severe negative outcomes in those cases and I expect the devs for RimWorld expect to get similar results.

For games with a linear story that want you to touch point A then point B then point C they work well enough. For live service games that want to hook you to new content with extrinsic rewards and are willing to constantly pour in new quests, achievements, and steps for you to take these systems are great. For a game that largely wants you to take control of the narrative, story, and direction that your game shape up to be, achievements have proven to be poison.

There’s an opportunity cost to every aspect of development. Making achievements means not doing something else. Maximizing sales for achievement types, as you suggest, means not making dlc or developing new content or fixing bugs or improving performance. I don’t know anything about Tynan or what he “cares for,” but game development is about making hard choices.

There are myriad examples of development teams who tried to please everyone and ended up with mediocre games.

Conversely every success is the result of a focused vision that satisfies a core player base.

Considering how far Ludeon has come it’s hard to argue they don’t understand their core design and player base.

As you said, there are lots of games out there. But the problem might be your attitude, not the games.

There's no right or wrong it's simply a case of enjoying the extra goals Steam Achievements add to a game & it's not an attitude thing, that's a weird thing to say.

Others:
They don't have to be storyline achievements, I actually think games with just storyline achievements are done by dev's being lazy. That said if I enjoy a game enough I'll happily go through the campaign again to get alternative achievements that weren't available on the previous playthrough.

Anyway great Necromancy peeps.:scythe:
A necropost just to argue an easily found fact. Why.
