RimWorld

Do Dwarf Fortress fans really like this?
I see that this game is heavily inspired by Dwarf Fortress. I love Dwarf Fortress. The graphics or UI did not bother me much. I'm more impressed by content and depth of the mechanics. Are the people praising this game people who wanted to like DF but couldn't due to the graphics or UI? Or are long time DF fans mostly fans of this as well?

Take Gnomoria for example. That game basically brought DF-like gameplay with better gfx and UI but the gameplay wasn't up to par with DF so it seems like a lot of people passed on it. Does this game actually capture the opportunity to improve not just on the UI and GFX but the underlaying ideas and mechanics that made DF fun?

Or is this game not as similar to DF as I would hope?

Well, I've played DF for... Eh... I dunno, probably around six or seven years now, and saw RimWorld way back when it had almost no content, no research projects, and pawns had stacking mood debuffs "saw a dead body" every time they saw them spiralling down into insanity once they run outside to check the freshly killed crowd of bandits.

I love both games, even though both of them actually have a different scope (in my opinion). I do declare that DF is, for a mulitude of reasons, much more expansive and 'big', but at the same time, RimWorld does not go for scale as much as direct control and tactical (somewhat) combat/defences, and is a much more streamlined experience overall.

My perfect game would basically be DF's mechanics (proc generation and physics, and long-promised magic) implemented on the same graphics engine as RimWorld, with social interactions, controls and UI of the former also replaced by those of the latter, and a huge big button somewhere in the "New Colony" menu that allows me to switch between the content of both games. I'd pay a lot for that.

Gnomoria was dissapointing on the long run. Im not able to play DF cause the UI is.

You have control over your pawns here, and direct one at that, you have cover, you have lots of weapons and security features with mods (and even without them). Dwarf Fortress is MUCH more deep in terms of mano-o-mano fights, but also, IRS much less involving, as aside from the Adventure Mode, you are never in direct control - best you have are squads.

Between this and DF, I prefer Rimworld. It's not nearly as deep (yet), but it's much more fun. Easier to get into with a UI that you can manage when 3/4th asleep and deciding that it's a good thing to lead your group into a fight against a dozen robots.

Rimworld doesn't have the deep macro elements of DF (though the Wanderlust update is a step in that direction), but it has much more detailed and involved micro elements. That comes with a cost in processing in the form of map, item and pawn limitations.

The good news is that Rimworld is capable of adding more macro elements, world events, faction politics, ecological manipulation etc. going forward much more easily than an abstract game like DF can provide any sense of granular control.

I did that but I am always afraid to download and install anything that's free from Google. Usually ends up costing your OS :)

So many people say this and that game is DF inspired, fact is, most of the devs in those games hasn't even played DF ^^

The newer the better. Due to the physics it simulates, it will hog all the (single core) CPU power you have to spare.
