Why does the combat suck ?
was expecting something on par with DS2 sin of scholar, bloodborn, shadow of mordor ...

Combat is just '' Hit hit hit hit hit hit ... '' until the monster / ennemy die, no thinking, no skills required.

Is this game only good because of the story ?

If that's what you're doing for combat then you probably don't have the difficulty very high.

There are bombs, potions, positioning mechanics, etc. At the end of the day though, every game is just "hit hit hit" until a monster or player dies if you want to simplify it to that degree.

Try hit hit hit on harder difficult lol. Don't try dodging at all :)

Play on Death March and give your hit hit hit hit hit tactic a try. I doubt you're playing on a hard difficulty at all, because there's no way you can keep that up on harder difficulties.

I chose the difficulty below the hardest one, I also tried the easiest difficulty. All the ennemies get is more health, and it make the fight last longer ( and most of those fights are just boring fights, I didn't get too far into the game, but for example, the first ''boss'' the gryphon was boring as ♥♥♥♥ ).

I feel the combat is blend, and repetitive, no cool mechanics that the boss use, no difference between each ennemies, all human behave the same in combat and so on and so on.

@mari Sorry but hit & dodge is boring, there's no mechanics, that's what I mean. In DS2 for example, ennemies don't always behave the same, boss have cool mechanics you need to figure out in order to succesfuly kill them ... in Witcher 3, every fight feel the same, hit & block / dodge, repeat.

If I have to play more than 5 hours to enjoy a game, the game is ♥♥♥♥. I should enjoy it right from the beginning.

Sigh, if you were expecting DS2 kind of combat, sorry but it's on you for not paying attention to the literally dozens of videos out there showcasing the combat;

How far are you into the game do judge? Most human enemies parry the crap out of you so you can't even hit hit hit. All monsters dodge out of the way and they counter attack every 2-3 strikes.

Cranked to highest difficulty, combat is not particularly interesting. The one battle I have had lasting difficulty with is based on a timing issue and a change of AI mid battle. The AI begins using a different magical effect that is highly challenging to time and is immune to the anti-magic bomb. In order to learn the timing you must repeat the previous portion of the battle over and over.

It is computer gaming design SNAFU 101....

This game is mostly about the story. Truthiness.

I pre-ordered the game because I kind of enjoyed witcher 2.

Compared to other games with similar fighting style ( Assassin creed, shadow of mordor, DS2 ... ) combat is blend and boring to me. I played for maybe 4-5 hours on the difficulty below the hardest one, and also there's no penalty when you die ( I died once and it did nothing ) from what I've seen.

thank you for your honest reply, I also figured this game to be mostly about the story ... not really my style. Guess I'll go back to skyrim & DS2.

Okay, then what the fu** is DS combat for you? If I remember correctly, DS combat is all about "hit hit hit hit" and "dodge dodge dodge dodge". The f*cking same thing as Witcher 3.

Yes it is easier than DS but the system combat is almost the same.

Your issue is expecting Dark Souls in a game that is not called Dark Souls.

Exactly this. Expecting different fight mechanics for every single normal monster in the game is kind of stupid. "Boss'" fights have unique mechanics but just because this game isn't as punishing as Dark Souls doesn't mean it's bland.
