NPCs which seem to have a history with Geralt

It seems like everywhere I go there's a new NPC that pops up that seems to have some history with Geralt. For instance, the two knights Geralt meets up with on the way to Toussaint. Then again with Regis. Then there's all the guys in Skellige that Geralt already knows. Are these all characters from the novels or is CDPR taking some liberties with NPC creation given that Geralt is so old so must have made a lot of friends and enemies given his long life. My only Witcher knowledge comes from the 3 games.

CDPR did a good job developing Roche and Thaler. They are my 2 favorite NPCs across all of the games. I do think that Roche and Ves need to knock boots and get rid of some of the tension between them.
