I have no idea how often they are on sale.
If you feel like scumbagging and being somewhat powerful: Bandit (discount recommended)
If you hate humanity and wish to be the worst human being: Rivals (Wait a bit for a discount if any come for it)
IMO, Usurpers expands on the gameplay styles of the original characters, giving you a few variations of them. Magna foils Thane in being defensive than offensive and Sargon foils Zosha in being Witty rat except with Magic instead of combat. Ghor is kind of just another mage, except with abilities that enhance casting rather than combat like Sana and Brun. Elyssia does rabbit things and makes people hate her.
Bandits adds a couple of unique playstyles. Horace is basically just another fighter and Scarlet is another all-rounder who can get a lot of companions easily if things go well, sure. But Twiss is the evasive little twerp everyone loves to play as and hates to play against. She can't fight worth a darn most of the time, which can really be a pain at times, but she's also really hard to kill in combat between Evade, high Wits, and high Body, making her very safe. Sylas uses Bounties to his advantage to become even stronger
Rivals addsa bunch of specialists dead focused on a gameplay style. Fang is simply GO HUNT KILL PURE OFFENSIVE MURDER SLASH DESTROY! Griotte is day-time Jeckel and night-time Hyde by playing a ton of trickeries and probably has the clearest periods of strength and weakness in the game. Yordana's all about cycling spell cards she doesn't want so she can play ones she does while getting free unique spells out of the deal. Hargrave, finally, is all about positioning and has some great stats to boot.
Usurpers and Rivals also add some new rings and stuff, while Bandits have their own set of rings, largely "borrowed" from the main clans.
