The official Linux thread
Alright party penguins. We are proud to announce the launch of Civ VI Linux today (Feb 9th)!

I'll keep this thread updated with the most current info possible, so check in frequently for updates and of course to share your experience.

A huge heartfelt thanks to all the patient Linux gamers that supported our efforts. Especially those that sent cookies to our office with notes of Civ VI encouragement ;)

System requirements below:

Operating System: Ubuntu 16.04 / SteamOS
CPU Processor: Intel Core i3 530 or AMD A8-3870
CPU Speed: 2.93 GHz
Memory: 6 GB
Hard Disk Space: 15 GB
Video Card (NVIDIA): GeForce 650
Video Card (ATI): Not Supported
Video Card (Intel): Not Supported
Video Memory (VRam): 1 GB

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Some Intel i3 Processors may require an additional 2 GB Swap Partition.

If you dont meet the above system requirements, that does NOT mean you wont be able to run Civilization VI. If we know anything about the Linux community, its that you all find a way to make something work on your specific distro and comparable hardware sets. Chime in here with issues, and we will either help you get a ticket into our support system, or if unsupported there are many penguins that can help.

UPDATE 3/14/17 - We are live with Australian Summer! Linux and Mac are still in sync. Full details from the Windows announcement: http://steamcommunity.com/games/289070/announcements/detail/576861888092920827

UPDATE 4/20/17 - We are finally live with the Spring update!

UPDATE 12/10/18 - Cross platform update is finally live! All platforms are now in-sync and can play together.

That is true across all platforms. According to Ed Beach, it was pretty much a rewrite since Civ5.

I have noticed that the game tends to get "stuck" trying to exit. Have to either shutdown the machine, or a kill dash nine the process. Otherwise, fine so far.

Is the game stealing focus for anyone else as well? I have triple monitors and if I try to alt tab to a different window, Civ6 just pops back up (in fullscreen mode) and steals focus. I have to shut down the game to be able to do something outside of it, and launch it back up once done. Really annoying. RX480 btw.

Yes, this is common problem.

Cannot confirm it.
I have a dual monitor setup and always I click on the other monitor, the game minimizes.
For me it never steals focus, it gives all focus very willingly away.
This is also bad, because I cannot do anything other without minimizing the game.
Other games (espesially with a borderless window mode) let me play on the main monitor and do things on the other monitor without problems.

Odd, I play in windowed mode when I'm streaming and have no issues with focus or minimizing.
Let me check the settings.

You can set it to stay unminimized by adding
SDL_HINT_VIDEO_MINIMIZE_ON_FOCUS_LOSS=0
to the launch options.

Options/.ini files? Using launchtime options is clunky. Haven't we seen similar things before? Beyond Earth and even Civ 5.

As environment variable.
Works on any game that uses SDL for "windowing". not just Civ6; e.g. works on Borderlands 2, CSGO and many others, too.

Right click on ci6 in the library, press 'properties', under the tab 'general' you can set the launch options. Just paste what I wrote in there.
The resulting behaviour may be influenced by window-manager-settings. For me (XFCE) it works fine, but nor perfect.

Btw. Aspyr, can you confirm/deny mods for Linux? In Civ5, it took for some time for mods to come for linux + the SDK released for mods used compiled DLLs that couldn't be used on linux, so some mods utilizing this (NQmod, for example) couldn't be run on linux.

Any word on cross platform with PC? Are we going to see this within a reasonable amount of time or is this going to be long wait?

Mods and DLC actually use the same infrastructure now, so if DLC works, mods should work. Workshop support is something else, I'd wait for Aspyr to confirm that (and that will presumably wait for Workshop support on Windows), but in terms of just being able to run mods, I can't imagine a scenario whereby that wouldn't work, if DLC work.

Are you sure? From what I remember, in 5 it was kind of similar. Problem was that not everything was coded in XML files, but something was coded in DLLs with C++, which were then used in mods. And because SDK was not released under linux, you couldn't recompile that code for linux. Or something like that.

AFAIK the only platform issue in Civ5 relative to mods was case sensitivity.
