I checked this out, and just to clarify, you can only dupe 1 block at a time with this method, right? The block that's held in your 'hand', on the mouse cursor, ready to be placed from inventory. As shown twice in this video (placed blocks are not retrieved from inventory): https://youtu.be/IW97iXarUfo
This is quite a big find, if the devs didn't know about it (I didn't). I'd tag the QA team, here, but I can only do that on the forum. :-)
