ANNOUNCEMENT - Quick update on the Void War situation
Hey everyone,

Valve pulled Void War’s Steam page after a DMCA notice that says Games Workshop is claiming copyright infringement.

However we have not received any other communication from Games Workshop, and the only claimant information Valve has provided is Games Workshop’s public-facing infringements inbox and the name “Mal Reynolds", (yes, like the main character from Firefly). We have not gotten any response from GW when we emailed that inbox. So right now we can’t independently verify who submitted it beyond what’s in the notice.

We’re proceeding through the standard DMCA process to get the page back up, and we’ll post updates as soon as we have confirmed info.

....so do you think this is just a nuisance claim claiming to be GW?

Im assuming you've already protected the game from such a claim and even though it has elements of the 40k aesthetic it does feel distinct enough to be its own thing (dark dystopia space settings aren't exactly rare) so you're not worried?

Hope its resolved quickly, surely GW would have been more.... well, overt? Given their reputation.

Can't stop the signal, Mal.
Weird. Glad to have supported this title - it's most excellent. Hoping to see Steam resolve this drama for you sooner than later.

I'm on your side even vs GW
So it could be another "Frivilous DMCA take down" storyline episode?

Stale. :steambored:
GW doesn't own the GrimDark genre, just like Nintendo doesn't own the "cute, summonable creatures" genre. Hope you win this most likely frivolous lawsuit, and are able to relist your game!

Battlesector is a licensed GW product, though.
40k has covered plenty of generic aspects of grimdark sci fi. Void war went with legally distinct but enough you could recognize nods like Centurions for spacemarines. At the same time, empires having genetically altered supersoldiers is pretty common. As none of the elements used the same names (that GW did copywrite), I think Void war has a good chance of fighting off the DMCA.

Centurions can also be taken as fallout power armor or how about starcraft, battlestar cents,
GW is just being a Karen as always.

This is a company that tried to trademark the word space marine, so they probably would try

Hope it gets resolved in your favor, I've had this wishlisted for ages but have been unable to get around to supporting and playing.
I figured Subset Games (the creators of FTL) would be coming after you more than anyone else. The guys behind Warhammer don't own the rights to space demons, evil space magic and sci-fi fantasy.

Actually, I heard that Void war first went to the FTL people, and Subset Games said they were fine with it.
