As hyperdrive, that is usually quite easy, as long as you can control a bridge between arms. Considering you are vulnerable to being cut off when hostile territory extends onto your hyperlane networks, the fact you can hop arms pretty easily is a nice tradeoff.
As wormhole, you have to hunt for a space where the stars are close enough together, which might or not exist on your map. Ditto with warp drive.
In eliptical it is just a big blob.
Eliptical is great because of the freedom it gives you, and because it reduces the chances of having a bad start where you're squeezed in-between Fallen Empires. 8)
Spiral is great because of the way it creates such unique maps where you're somewhat seperated at first but then over time, the whole map opens up to you (I prefer 4 arms).
Started a new game today on a 4-arm spiral, got two FEs right on my doorstep and had to take some creative measures ('liberating' a xenophobic purifier empire to steal all their territory because I couldn't expand in the other direction, lol) to actually get anywhere. Much better.
