Italian translation almost ready: technical question!

A fan-made Italian translation is 99% ready to be released (just a couple of days for reviewing the text). I would like to ask to the developers if the game has an internal support for adding foreign languages (should we rename the files with an .ITA extension, for example?) or if we have to simply substitute the original ones.
