Survival Mode Info
Hello All!

We’re excited to see what you think about Banner Saga 2 - Survival Mode!

Survival Mode is a fun addition to the game that we’ve been working on. It’s still in development but we are at the point where we would like to get you involved with some playtesting and feedback.

What is Survival Mode?
It’s all about staying alive through as many battles as possible! Assemble a team from almost all of the Banner Saga Heroes and equip them with items earned through your victories. Heroes who fall in battle are permanently dead. Renown is used to recruit new heroes and to promote the heroes who survive. A 30-second timer keeps the action moving, leaderboards will track how you rank against other players, and a whole set of Survival Mode achievements has been added. Try a game on Hard Mode for an even more difficult challenge and see if you have the skills to survive!

How do I access Survival Mode?
  • Right click Banner Saga 2 in your Steam Library
  • Click on Properties
  • Navigate to the “BETAS” tab
  • Use the dropdown menu to select “survival” branch
  • Download the Update
  • Launch Banner Saga 2
  • Click on the “Survival Mode” banner

We’d love to hear your feedback, thoughts and opinions. We’ve created this “Survival Mode” subform for all of your questions and discussion.

Skol!

Skal! On this right now.

It's back! Awesome.

Question. when I played it a while back when it was released by accident I exited a battle by using the quit button. I think because I did it that way it completely erased my saved game file in profile 1. I was 16 battles into without promoting my characters because of the bug that was there before. Starting it just now it shows that I have won 16 battles on easy but still no save file there. Is it gone forever and did it get erased because of the way I exited? I'm thinking that is what happens if you lose 3 battles while trying to complete all 40 also? Total erasure so you can't just go back and try again?

That save file is likely gone forever, but even if it still remains it would probably be corrupt or problematic as we've made quite a few updates and changes over the past several weeks.

no problem I understand.

So if you have a character killed in a battle they are not available anymore for that profile right? Even if you use one of your three "replay battle" options? (Edit: this is wrong)

If you try to quit the game in the middle of a battle (or get booted off steam or your computer crashes) do you lose that save game forever also?

Thanks!

The game saves prior to each battle. If you quit at any time, that save file will be available to you. If it is not, then we have a problem. If you see something like this occurring, then I'd like to see your log files to determine the cause.

HOWEVER, if you quit during the middle of a battle, then when you reload the save file that counts as one of your reloads. So... if you've already used your 3 reloads, and you quit during a battle, that's essentially the same thing as losing that battle, and the challenge run.

Since I played before I'm not getting the tutorial thing again so I'm a bit confused on some of the rules.

Thanks!

Sweet!

About halfway through my first run on normal and its been pretty awesome so far. The constant 1 kill = 1 extra turn mechanic (Call to Arms?) is an excellent idea and it's actually advantageous to finish off enemies now!

Just two questions:
  1. I'm assuming those achievements shown in the survival start menu will be included to the Steam Achievements once this is out of beta?

  2. Any rough ideas on how to go about implementing a survival mode in BS3? Would it be possible to say, transfer survival save files between games, or play through the entire trilogy's worth of battlefield locations in BS3's survival mode?

Yes, it's basically Pillage mode from the start: Alternating units in a fixed turn order. It definitely changes the dynamic quite a bit from the team A/B turn order of the story game.

Yes I was waiting to hook up the Steam end of the Achievements until we release Survival to the public in general. After that point, if you log into Survival, your gained achievements should transfer into Steam automatically.

We haven't really thought of that yet. It's definitely _possible_ to transfer survival save games. I would love to see a Survival mode that incorporates every battlefield of the trilogy, though.

Perhaps we will retrofit Survival mode into TBS1 with its own set of battlefields, in the meantime.

That would be cool. Saga1 SM will feel a bit "tighter", as it has less units and lower ranks. Balancing that, so as to be equally fun on all boards/difficulties, will probably be more challenging!

I was wrong in something I said earlier.

If one or all of your heroes die during a battle and you choose to replay the battle then none of them are dead and you start that battle fresh. I used to think you would have to replace them from the roster for the replayed battle.

I had low expectations when I proposed a simple skirmish mode using end-game heroes as a base due to work on patching, resting and TBS 3.
I would ever have expected to see a full fledged Survival mode with leaderboard and its own achievements.

You guys are crazy and I love you. Was waiting to see if there would be a change to achievement renown gain but this mode just made me get the game ready for Survival :dredge:

Once all 3 games are out and Game of the Century award achieved, maybe put out the trilogy as a single game with the content reworked with the new features added along the way of development each game....
Once can dream, but if TBS 3 is that successful, it would be great.

When you click on the survival banner, it mentions that you should "fish" the game to avoid spoilers. It should be "finish" instead, right?

Already on our list to fix :) Typos! Always typos!

I'm excited. Jumping into this right now.

Edit: Ya'll have added a whole new level of legit excitement to this game. Just managed to beat first level of hard mode and I need a stress break, haha! Great stuff!
