if you can backtrack to the exact same location the game remebers it.
But this stratgey can work only on places u can revisit like detroit you apartment etc, places like sarifs plant , highland park picus etc. are one time visit so if you dropped it there , buy a new one.

If you want one that badly you can find one in Tai Yong Medical. The bit where you move the crane, move it to the distance and go over to where it stops, in the small room there look right before you'd normally turn left, there's a silenced sniper rifle there
