My Save Game File is Gone (NEED DEV)
Logged into the game this morning after playing all night and all my saved game data is gone. 8-9 hours worth of gaming... gone. I was logging in and out all of yesterday and had no problem. Now when I log in nothing is there and the intro to a new game plays. I have looked in my save game folder and there is save game data there. Also, when I log in the game I do see my old save game info under older save but when I go to load it nothing happens. If i cant recover my save game i'm calling it quits. I can handle the bugs, choppy fps and lack of content.... what I cant handle is my save file being deleted. Does anyone have any ideas how to get my content back?

- URGENT -

If a developer checks this thread, make sure that the XYZ values of Position in StoredInteractions does not end up at floating point values that get stored as -1.#IND00 because it breaks the loading of the save file.

!!!!!!DO NOT PLAY UNTIL BUG IS FIXED - WILL CAUSE OLD SAVE FILE TO BE OVERWRITTEN!!!!!!!
SAVE GAME PATH - C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS
In case you need to make a copy of the game.

~ SUSPECTED CAUSE OF PROBLEM ~

> If you have name any Plants, Fauna, Planets, Systems, Etc with special characters such as @,!,#, then this might be the possible cause of the problem. If you used a or had a character that looked like this [x] or [] then this could be a factor as well. Thanks to Teabobaggins for the find.
> If you closed the game out by using Alt-Tab or Alt-F4
> If you bluescreened durring game play
> If your game crashed it could cause Save Data to corrupt
> If your using Steam Cloud (steam overwrites your save game)
> If you load your game from a different computer then the original PC you started your game on (download and launch the game from a secondary PC)

Ok, so here's a quick guide how to use the No Man's Save tool to fix the types of broken saves in this thread. Hope you guys can get it to work!

Get the tool No Man's Save by nomansuniverse from the Reddit thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyMods/comments/4yjft9/no_mans_save_save_encryption_and_decryption_exe/

1.) Run the tool as described in the first reddit post to decrypt your save directory. If it's too complicated, try to read a bit about how to use the command line in Windows. It's not that hard. Maybe someone makes a more userfriendly version.
2.) If the tool is unable to decrypt a file, remove the broken original file from the save folder, one of the three hopefully works. Try to work with the file with the latest modification date.
3.) Always leave the files with the same name, don't rename, you won't be able to load a renamed save. The game does not care if either doesn't exist.
4.) Open up the decrypted JSON file in a text editor (the one in windows might not handle the big file so you can use something like the free Notepad++).
5.) In your decrypted file, search for #IND to find broken numbers like -1.#IND00. Then remove the blocks around it like Don'tCopyThatFloppy in post #957 in this thread. You can also change the numbers to be something valid so your value ends up looking like "BuildingLocation":[0,0,0] or "Position":[0,0,0,1] if you're unsure what to remove (the game should be fine, just go to another planet before encountering that weird placed thing).
6.) Select all text in the file and copy it into a JSON validation tool like http://codebeautify.org/jsonviewer or http://jsonlint.com/ to find places which have invalid characters in the text. If there are errors, try to use the error messages of the validation tool to find the places inside the JSON file open in the editor. Rename places with illegal characters which might look like "CN":"[][][][][]" in the editor, just change it to "CN":"x" and it should be fine.
7.) Search for just an exclamation mark "!" inside the editor. Normal save data does not contain it, if its in a discovery name, you should remove the ! or replace it with something else. You can also search for "#" or "$" which should not be in there normally I think.
8.) Use the tool to re-encrypt the save data and try to open it in the game.

(It's best to do this while Steam Cloud Synchronization is disable for this game)
(Also you can actually do play around with the save data while the game is running and ALT-TAB'ing out of it. For more experiments windowed mode works best for me)

If the game actually hard crashes during loading instead of the game just ignoring a requested save game loading, I think it means there are still invalid characters like "!" inside the discovery names. Try to look through the values with a key of "CN" if you find special characters. Valid characters seem to be brackets like ( ) or < > and a normal dot . character. Others I'm not sure.

Also thanks to CHARMANDER for finding the tool :-) Didn't know about /r/NoMansSkyMods

~ OTHER POSSIBLE FIXES ~
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
> Here is how you access the experimental patch (Reminder that this is not an offical fix or patch)

To access the Experimental branch right-click on the game from the library page and select "Properties". Among the available tabs will be the "BETAS" tab.

Your new branch should be listed in the dropdown menu under "Select the beta you would like to opt into:"

Code: 3xperimental
If you encounter issues with this please mail support@hellogames.co.uk and include [EXPERIMENTAL] in the subject.

Right click No Man's Sky in your library, select properties, then select the updates tab and untick Steam Cloud Sync. (May solve problem if Cloud is causing save error)

1 Copy your folder, "%appdata%\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS" and save it somewhere, desktop for example.
2 Then delete the folder located in "%appdata%\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS
3 Turn off Steam cloud
4 Launched Game. Result=Doesn't Work.
5 Copy the saved folder and paste it.
6 removed MFstorage3 and storage3
7 Launched Game. Result=Doesn't Work.
8 Removed removed MFstorage3,2 and storage3,2. In the folder only must contain the MFstorage.hg and storage.hg

Hi guys, perhaps it might help some of you:
1. first of all, backup all your save files, just to be sure
2. To restore in Win10 (also supported as from Win 7), right click your save file and select "restore to previous version" (or alternatively, right click, select properties and go to the versions tab).
3. Try restoring all your save games (mf_storage, mf_storage2, ...) but make sure that you reset the mf_storage/storage pairs to the same version.
4. Ensure that you only keep the restored save files in your directory (as the game tends to load the most recent one). I just only kept the restored files and deleted the others.

Same bro. I feel ya
yep me too. if they dont fix this im out
Yup, same here
Some things can't be defended against.
This would be one of those things.
The worst part is I already had to restart the game once due to a bug where outpost didnt spawn on a all water planet :steamsad:. So right off the bat 3-4 hours of my game was blown away and now its like deja vu all over again.
Has anyone found a fix yet?
Reading about this made me hit the button that steam never wants you to hit.
I'm not going over the 2 hour refund mark to have it wiped.

Sticking to PS4 only from here on.
This will be the last game I every buy from hello games. Also, this whole steam 2 hour return policy is a joke considering it take 2 hours just to boot the game and make it playable let alone to find game breaking bugs. All in all I will not be restarting for a 3rd time and this game will now collect dust on my steam shelf. Again I feel defeated and now robbed of my time and money :'(

What country do you live in?
Just happened to me right now. How do you have 2 saves, one current one previous.. and they both wipe?
I'm in the US and I'm not sure it's considered redundancy if it's a possibility that both save files can wipe.
