Experimental Branch 04/09
Hello Everyone,

First of all, thanks so much to everyone who has already spent time playing No Man's Sky and letting us know about any issues you've experienced.

Steam users are able to opt-in to the Experimental Branch, where we have pushed a patch to address some problems. We'll be rolling out these fixes to other platforms as soon as possible.

To play in Experimental, right-click on No Man's Sky from the Steam library page and select "Properties". Among the available tabs will be the "BETAS" tab. Enter "3xperimental" in the textbox and press "CHECK CODE", then select it from the dropdown menu.

The patch notes are as follows:

Experimental Branch 05/09
  • Fixed a crash introduced in the previous experimental build.

Experimental Branch 04/09
  • Players are now alerted to new record catches.
  • Players who are actively fishing are now marked as Busy for the purposes of group invites.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented quick access to items stored within the Nutrient Processor's inventory while cooking.
  • Fixed an issue that allowed fish to occasionally swim above the surface of the water.
  • Fixed an issue that could make it difficult to target interactable objects while holding a fishing rod.
  • The effects when releasing fish back into the water have been improved.
  • Fixed an issue that made it difficult to summon the Exo-Skiff in VR.
  • Improved the accuracy of the fishing float in rough seas.
  • Specialist bait can now be placed in the Exo-Skiff's cold storage inventory.
  • Fixed a rare issue that could cause a previous popup to appear over the top of your most recently caught fish.
  • Fixed an issue that caused a grey or black dot to be drawn in the starship crosshair after boarding with a fishing rod equipped.
  • Improved the visibility of the fishing line in some lighting conditions.
  • Fixed a number of minor audio issues when fishing.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented wave audio from playing while far from the shoreline.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the wave audio to be out of sync with the visuals while standing near or in shallow water.

  • Improved the objective clarity of a number of expedition mission steps.
  • Adjusted the catch rates for certain mission-specific fishing items.

  • Fixed a rare bug that could reset player freighters when warping.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause resources to disappear from Freighter Refiner Rooms when warping in a capital ship.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented players from leaving Title selection and returning to banner customisation when choosing a title and banner.

  • Fixed some incorrect labels in the freighter customisation UI.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the page dots to spill out of the UI for players with many unlocked titles.
  • Fixed a minor text formatting issue in procedural artefact descriptions.
  • Fixed a number of minor visual issues with Hauler-class starship wings.
  • Fixed a visual corruption issue with water rendering.

  • Introduced a minor memory optimisation.
  • Fixed a number of minor visual issues with the Lost Angler's Rig.
  • Fixed a rare crash related to AI starship behaviours.
  • Fixed a rare crash related to starship handling.
  • Fixed a rare memory issue related to icon rendering.
  • Fixed a rare crash related to creature navigation.
  • Fixed a rare crash related to animations.
  • Fixed a rare issue related to teleporting to water planets.
  • Fixed a rare issue that caused some large saves to crash after loading.

As always, thank you to all players who use Experimental and take the time to report any issues you encounter.

Please note there is the possibility that experimental builds may introduce new issues that haven't been caught in test. We'd like to recommend that all players back up their save files, by making a local copy of the st_[userid] folder found here on PC: %appdata%\HelloGames\NMS\ and here on mac: ~/Library/Application Support/HelloGames/NMS/

Note that we don't anticipate any issues here. However, performing your own backups could mean the difference between resuming play immediately, or waiting for the next patch.

If you decide to opt out of experimental and return to the main branch, we strongly recommend resuming from a backed-up save from the main branch, rather than taking an experimental branch save back to main, which may cause unexpected behaviour.

Feedback and reports of new bugs/issues being found on Experimental are welcome, so please reply to this thread or submit a ticket to https://hellogames.zendesk.com/ with the phrase "Steam Experimental" in the ticket title. If you are running any mods for the game, please list them along with your bug report.

loading into a save where i'm on the water of a toxic planet and it's down to 4fps (typically 100-120fps) on gtx3070. This is both experimental and base update. Was smooth fishing earlier today, but after quick saving from leaving ship cockpit and returning I'm getting this 4fps bug that isn't improving no matter how long i wait in-game.
I know it's past Labor Day.. but can we open the water slide for a couple week /s :steamhappy:

Thanks for the bobbing items that react to the wave. I'm loving the water and making lighthouses. I guess I'll try fishing even tho growing up on a lake: didn't dwell on it.

Works as a Water Slide, and Food Processor tried to sink me.

I'm on MacOS Sequoia on an M2 Pro and 2/3 of the screen is black. This was a fresh install with the latest experimental branch. Changing graphical settings does nothing.

Only a full reboot of my PC seems to fix this. Happens every time I launch the game a 2nd time after a boot.

Win10
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core @ 3.80 GHz
16gb RAM
GTX3070

EDIT:
nvm a reboot didn't resolve it this time. UGH

Getting to Nexus and loading save from. There fixed it. Something about loading a save from planet-side is borked

every single time. when the major release out, the very first update is super stable. then the next updates, including experimental, will make the game unstable.

Visual bug on macos version since fishing update. ghosting of brightest areas of screen persists, cleared with esc, but then replaced with new ghosting when view is moved.

eg, teleporting into space station outline of teleport is overlaid as ghost over everything
visual bug when changing POV after casting the angler. it disappears.

Do you have DLSS enabled? Disable it, there's been DLSS issues since Worlds Part.1, if you are lucky enough by enabling/disabling in many times it stabilises and works normally

dev somehow fixed it in the new update, but the experimental fk it up again.

I see I see... Well that's a real shame, hope they manage to find what is going on and what causes the issue to be back
I'm also seeing incredibly high cpu frame times while in planet, and higher everywhere overall, with highly reduced frame rate (while playing on VR).

That sounds like the display isn't being cleared and something (sky box?) which should be rendered isn't; see “Hall of Mirrors” (HOM) effect (ref. original DOOM) for something similar. Most likely, something which NMS relies on isn't handled by your GPU driver or hardware: the usual “make sure that drivers are sufficiently up to date” applies.

You should report this one to HG, stating OS version, GPU driver version (if possible) and exactly what hardware you're using. If you can get relevant log text from wherever it's put on a Mac, so much the better.

It's the animated background of the in game menu - that transparent bit you can see 'behind' all the text. whenever you leave the menu, whatever was behind it now ghosts over the main view.

before the update, all good, since the update, ghosting, but only after you use the menu. A fresh game has no ghosting until you 'esc' the menu and then whatever was behind it is what remains as a ghost image until you refresh it with a new ghost by opening and closing the menu again.

I have screenshots.
