I think you get like 3 in the first phase completion...
Mostly chromatic metal.
You have to do it when the mission lets you or else wait until you earn some more. I found this out the hard way. Next time you get another 3 and it take you to your inventory to upgrade, you will be able to place all 6, or however many you have.

As soon as you got them the game should have gone straight to the inventory upgrade screen. something must have interrupted that. Next time you get an inventory upgrade you should be able to use them.
In addition to what others have answered, you can also use them at drop pods. You do have to first use the drop pod the normal way, to add another slot, after which you can use it again to use any inventory upgrades you have.
1. look for Exosuit Charts at some trade terminals in the system
2. research and install the Radar Amplifier, a v2 Exocraft Radar upgrade. It allows you to scan for drop pods that are located relatively close - usually no further than 40 sec - 1 min flight.
