Why is the game laggy all of a sudden?

The last time I played the game was last year and everything was silky smooth. I was quite happy with performance. I've just started it again to check the latest updates and the whole thing is laggy as hell, even after turning settings way down and restarting.

I'm currently going from 80fps down to 5fps with no warning, huge hiccups and lag spikes.

Has something changed?

GPU: GTX 1060 6Gb
RAM: 8Gb
MOBO: MSI Z87-G45 (Sound chipset: Realtek ALC1150)
OS: W7 Home 64Bit

you know i was thinking the same thing warren. my fps since reinstalling has been all over the place no matter the setting. also our specs are similar although your gpu is better :)

Try turning terrain tessellation off until the devs push a fix for the performance impact it seems to be causing.

I've updated my video drivers to the newest and cleared the cache (there's two and they were both rebuilt on restart). Neither change made any difference to performance.

I will turn off tessellation to see if it improves anything.

The beta '3xperimental' build works really well for performance, I have the same card, I would try it out. But make a save backup just in case.

I did read somewhere that a recent update caused this. Is that true?

They must have been referring to the 3xperimental build, most people get WAY better performance with it, others don't. A few people get worse performance, and that's likely where you read it.

But if tessellation makes no change that's a good sign, then it's optimization of the current live build and not some aversion the software carries against your particular setup.

I noticed some performance issues as well. Textures not loading properly, mouse sensitivity not matching ingame options.

I wonder if they've been tinkering with something on their side (since its all online).

You could validate your theory if you spent time during offline play and monitor it to see if your issues still occur. If they do, then it isn't an online problem but most likely local to your machine.

Very long time since you have played means: you are better de-installing and removing all folders and re-installing the game with the newest update.
Keep Cloud Saves turned off.

Why should cloud saves be turned off?

That way any old files in the cloud are not added back into your install.
