Why do people say Darkwood sucks?
I don't get it, I've recommended this game on horror channels and chatrooms and sometimes people say DW sucks. Why? I can't wrap my head around it, I mean I know opinion is opinion but...

I've literally never seen horror art like this... The artist Artur Kordas is up there imo with Zdzislaw Beksinski and H. R. Giger. The gameplay combined SH, zelda1, resident evil, diablo, and many more.. Its a frickin masterpiece that should be more famous and people just write it off...

Its sad to me, how is it that people won't praise this game? I mean some do but not enough, this game should be known by every horror fan. Its lovecraft, poe, and more, its not basic gore crap like killing field which I found boring and refunded... Its a straight up nightmare story with amazing gameplay, atmosphere, art, music, story, depth... And people refuse to try it.. To even give it a look.

I mean the art profiles alone should be enough to net any horror fan. I know opinion is opinion and preference etc... But I'm not praising a game just to do it.. I don't praise any game and say, oh this zeldas the best zelda, or this rpg is the best rpg... But to me DW is the best horror game. Best one I played... Why can't more people see this? I also enjoyed Amnesia DD which is more well known... But that game was 9 hours long if that, and is basically walking sim with puzzles and light stealth. This is a way more heavy game, with more content, scares, gameplay, atmosphere etc. I understand its not an online game with DLC garbage and micro transactions, but its on the same level to me as any of the previous resident evils or SH's. And that's not taking away from them, but in art, DW is superior imo. I get a far more creepy feeling looking at the trader, or even the frickin doctor, than the nurses in SH. Or the pointless pyramid head. Don't get me wrong I'm replaying SH1 and I love it, but its not the same as DW. That's how much I love this game.

Yea maybe I'm a DW fanboy but I can't help it, the games soul sucking it will forever be in my nightmares and in a fond way not one I wanna get rid of... Every horror fan should play this to the end or not judge it, but even before the end I loved it. The swamp only amped up the action and to be honest I kinda liked the first 2 areas best just for the subtle creepy darkness and mystery of it all. This game deserves more than what people give it..

Three main reasons:

It's top-down, so that is super non-traditional for horror. It is a make-or-break immersion thing for people, so I can give them a pass on this legitimate point.

Acid Wizards are small-time. People will jump to conclusions about indie horror without giving it a fair chance; in their defense, there are a lot of really bad "quick cash" horror games to pick through for gems. On the other hand, really crummy and objectively bad indie horror games sometimes get popular, like Phasmophobia.

It's singleplayer. For many people, if they can't stream it on Twitch with a buddy, then it doesn't exist.

Terrible times.. Phasmophobia looks like it might be fun tho but its not like darkwood. I prefer a narration and progression in this kinda way.

Top down is ok for me, honestly I don't like smash tv or most twin stick shooters. That's whats so funny about DW, its not my preferred system either. But playing it, its not like smash tv or a twin stick clone. Its balanced like RE/SH, and its not waves but strategy and planning. Imo DW reminded me most of Zelda 1 if that makes any sense with the whole map and exploring.

But then it reminds me of many others as well, indies something that I try out from time to time. There's a lot of garbage, and then there's stuff like DW. I hope you guys make a sequel, I'll buy it, you got a fan for life here.

Its funny cause everyone who actually plays and sticks with this game loves it more than any other horror whats that tell people?

I mean I don't judge people for opinions, if they wanna bash it, its their choice.. But from what I've seen most people who stick with this game hold it in very high regard.

I honestly think its kind of more than a game with the storytelling, art, and atmosphere. Just like how dracula was more than a book look at the phenomena that became.

Huh... Never heard much people say Darkwood sucks, only maybe saw someone saying that the combat in it is clunky. But in general that's news to me, I thought that the game was well-received, not very popular maybe, but certainly liked among those who've played it

I do not know I really can't wait see what the devs make next

I have never seen someone that has played the game say it sucks. Even people I would not expect to like it give it multiple playthroughs.

Maybe I just go on to many trollish discord chats, it was users in GTFO and phasmaphobia telling me darkwood sucked.

I recommended DW and one user told me, I'll know to avoid DW then, just angry negative people. Downplays DW cause someone likes it, guy told me to stop talking to him when I told him he was missing out.

Maybe its just a lot of people are just negative by nature I dunno.

AFAIConcerned, Darkwood is one of the best horrors out there. No obnoxious jump-scares or reliance on cheap tactics. It's just pure delicious atmospheric horror at its best.

I haven't hear many negative comments about it. Not being popular is not the same as being bad. There are tonnes of unknown gems out there, just like we have an overabundance of absolute trollop.

Most negative comments I see about it are from people who: 1.) haven't actually played the game or 2.) were turned off by the controls. Neither of which are truly legitimate. Witcher 1 and Gothic have some seriously awkward controls, but once you adjust to them it's a total nonissue.

If anything, the only real way to properly criticize this game is to play it through all the way, and to do so blind. Its most glaring flaws are only apparent after nearing the end / completing the game. And as much as I hate to say it, the few flaws this game has are absolutely heartbreaking. It bumps it from an A+ experience to a B- ; it kills me to do so, because the game comes this close ---> |--| to perfection, and the devs fell flat on their faces at the finish line.

This is one of the games I want to recommend most to many people, but I'm always halted by those few major flaws. I've rarely been so conflicted by a game before. It's a delicious meal, but the last bite always has a razor in it.

Had no issue with the 2nd Act or even the finale myself. Many people who watched my stream greatly enjoyed both as well - most of which had never played the game at all. The controls are perfectly fine if you ask me.

I don't get how people don't like the controls, I'm not the biggest twin stick fan but the controls are perfect. The way guns and firearms handle, I've not played a top down game that handles them this well since metal gear solid 2.

Maybe they're macbook users. I'm away from my desktop pc and was itching to play so bad I installed steam on my macbook just to dive back in. It is literally unplayable with a trackpad; even after reconfiguring controls -- when combat time comes it is near impossible to track and time swings on even the lowest tier enemies. Sadly, I'll have to just wait till I get back home or go buy a $12 mouse from walmart to get my fix!

Does darkwood support controllers? You might could play it with a controller on mac.

It does have controller support -- I have a controller at home, I'm just out of town.
