Command line switch for 640 x 480 eliminates HUD options?
I was looking for a way to improve the graphics of Descent in DOXBox. One of the things I did was to add the -640x480 command line switch to the dosboxdescent_single.conf file.

[IPX]
ipx=false

[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.

mount C "."
c:
cls
Descent.bat -640x480
exit

This gave me a higher resolution but lagged the game. To address this I changed the cycles to "max" in the [cpu] section of the dosboxdescent.conf file.

cycles=max

This gave me a higher resolution and a playable game but did not give me an option for y head up display (HUD). I can only have the minimalist display. Pressing F3 does nothing. Anybody know a way around this?

I also changed the output to opengl in the [sdl] section of the dosboxdescent.conf file.

output=opengl

This looked better on my system but has no effect on the HUD.

AN BIFFED ELF!!!! Feb 20, 2014 @ 8:12am
Because Descent never had high-res HUD graphics. The high res modes were late patch extra hack-ins.

If you want hires textures, you'll have to place the texture packs with a high-res (set of) pack(s). This would be done in the .pig files. Also it sounds like you're not using Rebirth yet. Head over to http://www.dxx-rebirth.com and pick it up, it gives you substantially more graphics options, including monitor resolutions well above the ones you're capped at.

I use Rebirth all the time, have been for years. I've also have XL (prefer Rebirth).

I'm just messing around to see how far I can push the DOSBox version in Steam. Besides, Rebirth doesn't support Simuleyes. ;-)
