I was lucky enough to have the game gifted to me as a pre-purchase for the PC about a year ago now. (almost to the day) My spec was under par, and it didn't run. (But it wasn't my sad spec, as it turns out) Launcher started but 'Grand Theft Auto V exited unexpectedly. Please click retry or safe mode' This was my main issue and my hunt was on.
Your list of attempts is about half mine :)
Some of the 'fixes' became ludicrous but I felt 'desperate' enough to try them after many weeks of on/off tries.
-'enumerating audio devices at launch', certain devices plugged in, turn on Windows features - media player,
-disabled AMD high definition audio drivers
-powered off USB3 interface
-unparked all cpu cores
-updated bios from A03 to A07 !
-Re-installed the game 3 times! with/without AV
-removed HD6850 Sapphire - used onboard graphics (updated Intel onboard drivers, etc etc
-wrong colour under pants!
Although I was patient enough NOT to flip the desk :P
-Addressed the onboard graphics trick that some people reported.
-The tedious, time consuming taks of the 'fabled' .RPF file checksum fiasco.
-The inane chore of checking various error codes from the GTAV launcher log;
--Game exited with code -1073741701, code -1073741819, Code: 1 (LAUNCHER_ERR_INVALID_OUTFILE)
--Launcher error. Code: 7
The dark, burning feeling that I really didn't NEED to do any of this. As you suggested, do I blame R*? F**k it. By complete coincidence I had bought a new HDD. SO...
TL;DR - I had a spare HDD and reinstalled Win 7, Steam, GTAV.
I'd like to say thanks for being so patient and diligent and also to post all your info, hopefully it will help others. The spare drive is not the best fix by any means and not cheap for some (back then it was £34/$48/180 PLN for a 1GIG WD Blue Caviar)
*Just a side note. In my personal use I found CCleaner fine for 'most' crap/shredding but the reg cleaner is very poor. I tend to use AusLogics.
Basically, I grabbed the source code for CEF 3.2272.2029, slightly changed CefInitialize to always start in no-sandbox mode, and built it like that, then copied it to the Social Club folder. Not even sure if that actually made a difference, but the launcher itself seems to have stopped throwing errors... but the game doesn't work, still. So, for anyone who may happen to be browsing this topic and has their launcher crashing, you may try replacing libcef.dll with this: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-l32Q5MmmUPcFNRaUd5WW1CWmc/view?usp=sharing
...but I am confident to say that this will probably not make any difference.
EDIT: Yep. Don't even bother downloading this, ignore what I said. It will still crash. It's Rockstar's code causing the problem.
Thanks, that's nice to hear :P However, I think I'm just screwed. I bought the game for the PS3 as a pre-order, then bought the Xbox One version, and then decided to buy the PC version and also gift another copy to a friend (who, ironically, has much lower-end specs than me and it works for him, so he decided to spam in this topic earlier). And I wouldn't even care that much if I could transfer the progress I did on the PC back to my Xbox One characters, so I can continue playing Online, but Rockstar decided to not even implement that.
It's not that I don't like the game, or the company, but they suck at porting their games to the PC, and it's a fact. Just look up the GTA IV PC autostart screen.
I deleted my docs contents except the two profile folders and it loaded, ran like a POS but it worked, Did a few things, like looking at whats new etc.
Switched it off for some food etc, come back same ♥♥♥♥ doesnt work!
I get a lot of taking to long to verify ownership messages, D3D.
But i can always get to the menu (if it doesnt crash at the sirens), select story, then its just dead...
Quick explanation: Windows has applied updates on the same day as the 1.32 update came out, which confused me and made me think it's a bug in Rockstar's code. Turns out Microsoft decided that I REALLY WANT TO HAVE DEBUG BOOT MODE TURNED ON, so one of the updates must have probably enabled it at some point.
Here's how to fix it (or, at least, how I fixed it):
1. Go to msconfig. The quickest way to do that is to hit Windows key and R, together, which should display the "Run" dialog. Type in "msconfig" and hit enter.
2. When the msconfig window appears, go to the "Boot" tab.
3. Click on the "Advanced" button.
4. If the "Debug" box is checked, UNCHECK IT.
5. Click OK, apply, close. It should ask you to reboot.
After doing those steps, and of course rebooting when you're asked, you should hopefully be able to start the game. If not - look through other forum topics about this problem; there might be a different solution for you.
