Could a VR makeover save this game?
I've got a shiney new HTC vive and its become clear to me as a buy VR game after VR game that some things just work in VR and some don't. what do you guys think? Can VR breathe a new life into HAWKEN? It seems to me that this entire catagory of games screems VR me.

As a side note its been a long time since i've played the game. The title is at this point an attention grabber. The game may not need saving.

It actually used to support VR for the DK2 a while back. Its been broken for years though.
i feel like it would take alot more time and money to remake into a VR game than they would be willing to put into it tbh. plus i'm not sure with the faster paced gameplay if it would work well with VR. i could see mechwarrior working decently well tho

it did used to work in VR--there's even a remnant of the setting for Occulus Rift in the Settings area. it either made you amazed and awed, or made you toss your lunch from vertigo, it was that good.
The features that used to make it good for VR play have all been stripped away, so have fun with that.

if this game had a competitive scene, and maybe a re release to go with it and some advertising, im sure this game could be big. it might get big on console, if they could cross platform it that would be neat.

@Ultimex: if you go to community.playhawken.com and checkout the Clan Hall threads, and on the main page also search "TPG", "scrims" for starters, you'll find there was a huge comp scene, and very well organized. and those milge players will come flooding back (for at least the first day, depending) when the official Release Candidate hits (allegedly in Feb). stay tuned

There was a community competitive league that has hung around for 3 seasons and is currently on hiatus until an update hits the PC version. Cross platform, PC players would undoubtedly wipe the floor at the end of the day with console players, but up until the upper-midtier skill levels, probably around the 1700-1900 MMR range, the console players could probably hang around pretty well. Once we go into the 2000+ MMR range I have no doubt that the PC players can dominate console players with a few exceptions.

Originally, they predicted this game was gonna be bigger than league of legends. No joke.

The way it stands, it's not good enough to be comp anything, and a new VR version isn't gonna get anyone new in. If it was possible to go back to hawken before they ruined it with billions of trash robots, changes, and the 'updated' HUD, then maybe, but the odds of them doing that are slim to none.

Hawken's had many years to prove it's not trash, but the consistent and 100% perfect string of epic failures every single time a developer shows it to the general gaming audience, well... Doesn't help at all that reloaded seems like a dumber, greedier, and more malicious adhesive.
The game has potential and has always had potential, it's just been screwed over big time by Meteor. Decisions made all the way back before the game even hit open beta in 2012 caused Hawken to be in the state it has been in for a little while.

It certainly has the potential to be an amazing game with a large competitive scene that works. The competitive levels of Hawken that I've competed in for 3 seasons were the best Hawken I've ever played. It's still an amazing game but it obviously needs a ton of work to make up for lost time and bad decisions. Salvageable but Hawken's chances are getting slimmer and slimmer.

Any continued development would be something I suppose.

I totally think having VR with the vive would be amazing, independently control each arm and use gestures for things like boosting and whatnot. It'd probably be extremely satisfying.

I'm afraid you would get motion sickness very fast though. The game is just too fast-paced to play it in VR "as is".

You could make a VR version, but that would need to be a different game, with mechanics that are optimized for the output device. Thus, VR players wouldn't be able to play with regular players, due to differences in how the game works (esp. movement). And I doubt that at this stage you could get enough VR players together to fill an arena 24/7. Let alone several.
