Sequel to this
I hope that there will be a sequel to this and follow the same route as SC3. I loved SC3 with the colonization and management, coupled with an interesting story (at the time), where hyperspace collapsed

SC3 was great. Here hoping next time our main goal will be painting map in blue ;)
Maybe I am alone in this.. but SC3 seemed like a giant pile of crap with the midi.. the animatronics.. the clunky colony/fuel management.. and the butchering of the starcon2 storyline.
You're not alone.

Star Control 3 was garbage, and most long-time Star Control fans will agree.
I find it strange how people hated it for its graphics, sound, fuel and colony management, etc... back then, it was great, games were still made difficult (or as people say nowadays, "similar to dark souls in difficulty"). I am still trying to understand why you guys/gals are saying its ♥♥♥♥... it was pretty epic for me.
So long as they add the DAKTAKLAKPAK I will be ok with it. I will not buy this game though.
this game is ok... the quests remind me of the old ages where objectives aren't pointed out to you. You have to visit your log a lot. But it is limited, you'll be landing on planets gathering resources a lot to get money (which is also known as resource units). But luckily, it is not such a grind, as one can get quite a bit of RU's on a full cargo, which doesn't take that long. Its a bit more cartoony feeling than the old star control, where the older SC had some sections/aliens that have some humour in it.

And the dataklakpak quests were quite cool in SC3, I enjoyed it :) , but sadly I haven't met anything simlar to them yet.

Star Control 3 was incredibly easy -- the solution to too many problems was to wait for ICOM to tell you the answer, then fly to a system that was only added to your map after ICOM told you to go there. There was very little exploration, and the colony system made it too easy to manage your fuel. It also kept the most broken ships from the previous game and added even more (the Doog ships are disgusting and you get them way too early). The only really difficult puzzles were recruiting the Clairconctlar (though the Exquivan basically tell you how), and getting the VUX back, which was optional.

The writing in SC3 was good, but the plot really wasn't. Way too many things were given easy, pat explanations.

The main reason it gets hate, though, is simply not being as good as its utterly amazing predecessor. Zelda II and Castlevania 2 get the same treatment; they weren't bad games, they were just a step down.
Star Control 3 was pretty great, but edgelords and spineless groupthinkers hate it for some reason.
This is coming from someone who spent their childhood playing Ur-Quan Masters.

It had its problems, but nothing really that inconsistent with game design of the age.
Most people I know did not like SC3, but I had no problems with it. I had a lot of fun with it, and generally speaking, the various new and revisited Orz phrases are still used by me today either as an inside joke with people or because what the Orz say can be very relevant to daily life.

The reasons my friends disliked it was because it wasn't Star Control 2 Super Plus High Definition Next Gen Gaming System or something like that; a friend of mine bought a 3DO specifically to play SC2 and this is the benchmark most everyone had used.

I don't think SC3 was garbage, but compared to any expectations one would have coming away from SC2, SC3 had a high hurdle to leap.

(Also I play SC1 on a sega nomad from time to time... sometimes the simplistic space battles are nice to pass time with!)

I really, really tried to like sc3, but for me it was a very poor sequel, it just was not a patch on sc2. Sc2 I could not stop playing, and played it over and over countless times (same with sc1)

However I did not mange to finish sc3 even once, honestly not even sure I even got a quater of the way through at most.

I attempted it multple times over the years (the last time about 8 years ago) I just do not enjoy it at all, it feels like a chore, I always get totally bored and do not find it interesting. I was almost forcing myself to get through just to advance the storyline, but even then I could not get hooked in. While I always went back to the urquan masters, which I last played and finished lasy year :)

While I think a sequel in this universe would be good, I still want and actual sequal to sc2 not a remake, however the original devs are working on their own game, so that game might end up as a proper sequal that I want. The original devs are not a fan of sc3 either and have stated if they did a sequel they are not counting it as canon.

So I do think there could be room for both universes, so a sequal to this could also be interesting.

Star Control 3 lacks a good deal of the character and story that made Star Control 2 great. That and they CGI alien designs looked terrible. For some reason they took the Pkunk(who were bird people) and made them dinosaurs. It also felt rushed and was really short. It wasn't the most terrible 3rd entry in a beloved space franchise(That would be Masters of Orion 3, which I am pretty sure was not really a game but a spreadsheet program) but it was no Star Control 2

I'm very happy that Star Control:Origins doesn't feel like Star Control 3 MK2.

Granted, the Rilou were a bit bizarre, but... most of them weren't CGI. They were animatronics.
I can understand why someone feels that SC2 was better, and i'd feel the same way, but i don't really think despite the odd design changes that SC3 was in any way a bad sequel.

As far as the design and dialogue aspect though, the Orz in particular were far better portrayed in SC3 than they were in 2.
I wasnt a fan of SC3. Various Reasons. Hyperspace and Lander Minigame went away, Colony upgrades and repairs were not a suffecient replacement. SC2 felt like Im the guy, this is my story, sc3 felt like Im the narrator of a story i have no control over. I felt like they were trying so hard to be Master of orion, a 6x space game. Different genre, failed miserably. Instead of giving me the story of a century, i felt like i was just a task master for colonizing home worlds for other aliens.

What I liked about it, is the fleet battles played clean, the animatronics gave characters more depth, and....The Orz. While SC3 did have phenomenal characters and story, i just felt it paled in comparison to SC2, but then again, Star Control 3 was a finalist for the Computer Game Developers Conference's 1996 "Best Script, Story or Interactive Writing" Spotlight Award, but lost the prize to You Don't Know Jack XL.

How the ♥♥♥♥ did this game lose a script and story contest with a trivia party game? whut....

No. It wasn't.

It may've been top-of-the-line in a technical sense...but the graphic were ugly.
No amount of CPU muscle-flexing can save that.

And it just wasn't a Star Control game. It didn't feel like one the way SC2 and SCO do.
It was like that horrible sequel that makes the movie series jump the shark, the one that's super low-budget, didn't bring back any of the original actors, and really didn't care about series continuity. That's Star Control 3.
Star Control 3 was better than Master of Orion 3.
And at that time, that was the best I could say about it.

Didn't enjoy it as much as I did SC2, though, for many reasons. But mostly because it had no charm, no love for details.
Using muppets for alien talking heads was inspired, though.
