Yeah 3 of us did the same thing and it's tough sh*t from Steam I suppose because you won't get your money back, or support but they still sell it to you though... nice racket.

Maybe this can help you:
However, the servers are down.

There was a post in a High Treason thread explaining why we can't play online mode

"This game can't be play on multiplayer (on-line) mode even if you bought here on Steam. This ♥♥♥♥ happens because we have two problens here:

1° The Steam don't give us the original serial code for a valid registration...The Act of War Direct Action and Act of War High Treason, here, have the same CLONED register for everyone. The only way to play on multiplayer mode is if you buy the fisical disc or ,in that case, playing in a pirate server.

2° Now that we know the first problem, we know the fact that we are playing a CLONED now we need tho do what the other guys do to play this ♥♥♥♥...first you need to download the patchs of those games (don't tray the official site of Atari because they don't have anymore) and install...afther that download the crack for the last patch that you already install...copy the crack of the patch and go to the paste C: Steam\...\Act of War (Direct or High Treason) now paste over the original crack game (Act of War.exe)

Now play and have fun... more very important think:

Original message from support:

Unfortunately, the only server is no longer being supported. Only the offline mode is available for this title.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

I for instance do NOT own the game on steam (yet).
I bought the retail years ago. Great to play but the servers were taken down two years ago.
Besides, telling people to install a crack in an official forum is either really brave...or dumb.

Apart from game developers not being able to accept DRM-unwilling people, cracks often solve problems.

Not only did some make games playable again but some also made Computercrashes unexistant. I just say Starforce - driver and Windows 7.

If this is what you mean by "official" forum, sorry, the "official" forum in atari has been closed for years, or abandoned if you put it that way.
The post does not come from me, but so what?
There is no shame in suggesting a "non official" executable for a game that no longer functions, there's still LAN available you know.

The term "official" was meant to be more in the direction of belongs-to-developers.
Official AoW Forums were taken down even before the game's website.
And yeah, I would go with abandoned in most Atari cases.

I was not wanting to intend to say that you should show shame or so, it is more that developers tend to deleted user posts thatt say such stuff. As I mentioned, most Cracks (in terms of edited executive) are useful.

They are as well completely legal as long as you own a license to play the game.

Many developers don't get THAT point, so they ban users telling stuff they don't like.

I think EA and Sim City are a great example.
Sim City was told to get a native mod support, so users can add custom content.

They say that the game has to be online to work.

nope. A user found a way to play offline, embedding stuff that is not free for usersy (he played the game in debug-mode AND offline. Separately.)

What did EA?
Deleted his posts that were trying to get EA to allow an offline mode and told that he were a hacker. Not a modder or so. A hacker.

The point behind all this is:
Although some files on the internet are really great to enhance gameplay, not all developers and publishers are happy that this stuff exists. There are however devs who really care about their games and those tolerate the players' rights.

Sorry, overread that.

to be honest people i only wanted to know why after i installed the official patch why wont my game boot up
T-Hog Jul 5, 2013 @ 6:42am
What bothers me is that Steam sells these games knowing they won't play, and then refuses to refund money. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ off loyal customers is NOT a good long term business plan.

I think you should try my guide if you haven't already, it's in the guide section.

there are 3 startup errors that I so far am aware of, the first one is Runtime Error 217, the second one is "Application is already running" error, the third one I know of is the kernel32.dll error, there might be more but so far I only know 3, my fix guide can only solve the first 2 errors, and that should fix about 90% of players' problems.

If you followed my guide and get the third error then I can't help you.

before I try to tell you what to do, let me ask you one thing:
What and in which order, did you already do?
