What's the use of this?
At high unlock levels you have transmissions that are not 18 gears.

Is there any reason to use these in your truck? Such as Allison 4700 RDS R.

Thank you!

But when you're on an even terrain that's more or less level and the loads are light you can easily do that with a 6 speed.

But when you have more gears than you need you can skip gears if need be, if for example you're not carrying any load or a light load you may go from 2nd or even 3rd to 4 or 5 then 6 or 7, etc.. this also depends a bit on the layout of the gearbox which is too technical for me to explain in English, or even Dutch, i just know how to use it :-)

If you are talking about the 6, 7 speed transmissions, yes they are usable.
They work better if you have a shifter, wheel and pedals.
Is that what you're talking about?

The Allison is a full automatic transmission.

It really depends mostly on your load, if you want to test it out, take a truck with 6 gears with a 30 ton cargo, drive to a bit of an incline, Stop and try to take off again.
Do the same with the same truck/engine and load, but now with an 18 speed gearbox.

Thats what I do too :steamhappy:

Very interesting info, thanks. I am driving a Peterbuilt 579, but if I click on a heavy load job it always say my engine is not strong enough. Is there a guide to setting up a truck for heavy loads somewhere?

It doesn't matter transmission or engine. That bars are just a "guide" if you will.

All the engines, trucks, and transmissions in the game will pull the heaviest load. NOw some may do this better than others.

It DOES make a huge difference when you're using a shifter.
And even with the SCS auto transmissions there are some climbs that are impossible to take off from no matter what gearbox you use.

Not every truck in the world has an 18 speed transmission in it. Different transmissions for different kind of jobs in the real world.......

What ^ he said.

Correct?

The Allison 7 is almost an exploit, it is clearly the best transmission in the game. It should, of course, be used only in Real Automatic as it is IRL the only automatic in the game and, manually shifting it would rob it of some of its usefulness and simply be silly. Note that there is a torque multiplier, and it does what you'd imagine.
It might not be the best for a moment here and there, heavy loads on very steep inclines, but it is almost always the best performing transmission and you will almost always arrive sooner if that is the transmission that you use.

Please forgive me if I appear to be hijacking this thread, I am trying to learn.

I have a IRL friend now retired (like me) that ran a trucking company. All his trucks were pulling lowboy trailers. He pulled everything from military vehicles (including battle tanks) to all kinds a huge stuff. If I wanted to simulate a company like his in game, do you have any ideas on how to start truck brands, setup, etc.?

Heavy Haul trucks will use a high gear count transmission, like the 18 speed Eatons, and a high horsepower motor for heavy loads. I have personally seen more classic style trucks, like the Kenworth W900 or Peterbuilt 389 used for heavy hauls, but pretty much any truck can be used. You are also able to purchase and customize your own lowboy, which you can use at will if you also own a truck.

There are also two DLCs that might interest you, depending on what you are looking for. The Heavy Haul DLC includes large, heavy cargo that are hauled as regular jobs on extended lowboys, which are a decent challenge. There is also the Special Transport DLC, which includes cargo hauled on the same trailer type, but is very large, not always heavy, and requires special vehicle escorts, and at least some skill to maneuver the very large trailers through corners. These are more low-speed, short distance, technical jobs than normal

I always have 13 speed in my trucks and until now I never discovered ANY heavy load I could not finish. I tried a 18 speed for comparision and the difference for me at last was not that big.
And due to the fact that I take loads based on their destination I mostly got lighter loads so I would need to skip gears all the time what I don't really like.
