Suggestions from an alpha backer
Intro
Good day Executives,
I enjoy this game more and more, seeing it definitely improved a lot over the game we played during alpha and beta phase, or early access in general.
However, there are issues and flaws, mostly covered by other members of this community, so I won't address most of them, this is not a bug report.

Instead, I just add some of my suggestions that might not have appeared so far.

Suggestions
  • Make NPCs react to bodies
  • Add ability to drag bodies
  • Unlock new skills only near beacon
  • Scanning (Y) should drain energy
  • Let us select the weapons of all agents without drawing them
  • Make agents defend themselves better
  • Ability to name/rename a save game
  • Optional tutorial
  • Researcher spam

Make all NPCs react to bodies
I can leave bodies all over the place with guards stepping on them but don't care. This completely kills immersion for me.

Add ability to drag bodies
Being able to drag/carry bodies away would add a lot to the stealth-gameplay.

Unlock new skills only near beacon
Too easy/convenient otherwise, also immersion breaking.
For example:
I was in a compound with my infiltrator who did not have the stealth-skill yet.
For one part, I really needed it though and when he just leveled up, I unlocked the skill and bam... all the sudden my infiltrator has the equipment and/or knows how to use it... on the fly?
Doesn't seem very believable to me and it really annoyed me.
At the least, agents should be at a beacon to level up. Even better would be to send them into a a facility where they will have to remain for a few minutes (just like research) until the new gear/skill is installed/configured etc.
This would add to game play, since the player would have to either wait for the agent, or take the risk of playing on without him/adapt his priorities for the time being.
He would also be needed to organize modifications to his agents, thinking ahead, not just clicking things impulsively. It would add a little more "strategy" into "RTS".
This is especially noticeable for augmentations.
You click on them and bam... it happened. I mean... what? They got new legs, arms, eyes, skin in... a second?

Scanning (Y) should drain energy
Right now, there is no downside to running around with the scanner always active, which kinda hurts game play a little.
You can easily and quickly find all/many researchers in an area without any downside.
If the scanner would drain energy (which also makes sense), the player would have to look for researchers more "actively", not collecting them "on the fly".

Let us select the weapon(s) of all agents without drawing them
This one is a pain in the behind for me.
How the weapon select menu works: You click on it and select the weapon of choice (duh) - which is immediately drawn!
How the weapon select menu should work: You select the weapon of your choice - but have to draw it with the space key yourself - total control, thank you.

The benefit?
You could conveniently be in the line of sight of a target you wish to attack and prepare your agents, then draw all weapons at once and engage.

Make agents defend themselves (better)
A very often requested, maybe even demanded feature by the community.
While I see the developers reasoning for brain-dead agents (player/skill decides the outcome of a fight, not the agents) I can only disagree with it.
I am certain that making them more efficient on their own would only make the game better, mor eenjoyable, as no one likes the "baby sitting" part it seems.
Agents that react better to defend themselves do not complete missions or win the game - only survive an assault where some players might be overwhelmed.
Additionally, it doesn't make any sense why a person, clone or not, trained to kill does not shoot back (efficiently) while under attack.

Ability to name/rename a save game
Nothing of importance, but it would be nice to see and could help organizing your save games.

Optional tutorial
I'd like to see a prompt like "Is this the first time you are playing Satellite Reign?" at the start of a new game,
so seasoned players could skip the tutorial and start right away with all agents.

Researcher spam
Maybe it is just me being lucky, but I found a lot of researchers while not even actively hunting for them.
I made one picture that says more than thousand words I guess:
http://i.imgur.com/jRtyapV.png

Too easy, too quick improvement. Researchers should be rare and more valuable.
Right now they are important, yes, but they aren't anything special.
You do not feel you just struck a gold mine when you found one,
you feel more like "Oh, just another researcher... ok why not! *bribed*"
Make them special, rare, valuable... and maybe harder to bribe?

Cosmetics
  • Infiltrators Katana visible before unlocked
  • Make bodies stay until agents left the area/limit is reached
  • More blood
  • Weapon attachments are not visible
  • Health bars at mouse over
  • Dirty lense/fog effect in the clone menu
  • X-Ray/Transparency effect for NPCs
  • Silly NPC names

Infiltrators Katana visible before unlocked
In the clone screen, he has the Katana even when it has not been unlocked yet.

Make bodies stay until agents left the area/limit is reached
Magic dissolving bodies are so 90s!
My gamer heart bleeds when I have to see a body disappear magically. Make it stop.
Let them stay for as long as the agents are in that area or, for performance reasons, add a limit that is in best case customizable in the options menu 0-99 or something.

More blood
I really miss the iconic blood pools from the old Syndicate titles.
This has nothing to do with being a gore-freak or something, this kind of detail simply underlines the already dark picture of the dystopic cyberpunk world and has to be there.

Oh the memories...

Weapon attachments are not visible
So I attached a silencer to my pistol... but I don't see it, bummer.

Health bars at mouse over
It is rather annoying to see all these irrelevant 2D health bars pop up just when I move my moue over the screen.
It totally distracts from the beauty of the game and I hope we will be able to disable this one way or the other.
Best case would be options to disable all NPC health bars or at least just civilian ones.
I see that enemy health bars do have a purpose, yet I would like to disable them as well.

Dirty lense/fog effect in the clone screen
The game is extraordinary beautiful in many regards. But here I feel like I'm teleported either back to the early 2000's, or someone forces me to play on a peasant box.
This area could look better, really.

X-Ray/Transparency effect for NPCs
I hate this effect with a passion. It makes the beautiful world ugly and appear littered by these flashy blinking white x-ray vision thingie effect.
Screenshot for clarity:
http://i.imgur.com/4kplE4E.jpg

Please, grant us the option to disable it.
I tried so via config - but it didn't work out.

Silly NPC names
In all honesty, this one kills me.
As far as I know, these names are the consequence of one of the backer-packages during alpha. Fine, I get that you needed ways to fund this. But I wonder when developers will learn that the "your name in the game" thing is a terribad idea.
Let me explain.

Your agents pace the Downtown streets, on their way to a mission, passing all these beautiful details and impressions that sucks the player right into the world of cyberpunk.
You are amazed, at awe, you feel the essense of cyberpunk flowing through you.
All is just so... good.
You need to 'recruit' some new assets for cloning. You scan them, read their little bio/info, check the stats...

...when all the sudden the beautiful immersion I just spoke about is destroyed by:
"Mr Shadow Magnet"
"Mr T. Tanuki2k"
"Mr Jonek theCloud"
"Mr The Smiling"
[...]

And surely countless of others, way worse, immersion-rapers like that.
I had to endure it in Prison architect, where it's even worse with terribad prisoner bios, bad grammar, no spell check and lots n lots of stupid goofiness.
Ok, PA is a "goofy" game here and there...

But Satellite Reign?
This level of sillyness is really hurting the beautiful cyberpunk world you created.
I am fully aware that you won't "fix" this mistake - because it would be unfair towards the backers, but I just had to state my opinion on this matter.
In the end, I hope mods may be able to fix this. Laugh at me if you wish, this is indeed a HUGE issue for me and I do not see why I need to endure names that aren't names in a single player game I try to immerse myself in...

I love details, that's all.

Thanks for reading. If anyone wants to add suggestions, I'll add them, hoping the developers read and consider.

Have a profitable day, Executives.

Very good suggestions all told, and you wrote them out more eloquently than I would have had the patience to.

Make NPCs react to bodies
I agree with this. Without your second point though it might massively ramp up the difficulty, especially if you are trying to sneaky beak around.

Add ability to drag bodies
Pretty much essential if NPC's react to them. Might be a bit of a technical hurdle to overcome though, and may even be why your first point wasn't included in the first place.

Unlock new skills only near beacon
Could take it or leave it. I'm usually so focused on what I'm doing when I'm in a compound that I don't even notice that my agents have leveled up.

Scanning (Y) should drain energy
I don't nessessarally agree with this. I think it would make what is already one of the more tedious aspects of the game more of a pain.

Let us select the weapons of all agents without drawing them
Please yes. That would be a wonderful thing.

Make agents defend themselves better
This seems to be a bit buggy. Agents are supposed to return fire when attacked, but sometimes they don't. I would like to see toggleable 'stances' for agents down the road but it's not a massive priority for me.

Ability to name/rename a save game
Would be handy. Especially if I decide to record this for fun times on Youtube I like to have a great multitude of save files in case a recording gets corrupted. Being able to name them would make life quite a bit easier in that respect.

Optional tutorial
Also yes please. At least let us skip over to the point that we go to rescue the infiltrator.

Researcher spam
Agreed here too. I would personally like to see researchers tied to missions more directly. After all, if I was a respected nurobiologist on a track record to tenure and some six and a half foot tall cyborg with a minigun shaped bulge under his neon flecked black trenchcoat approached me in the street and said that the chip in his head is telling him to offer me a job and he would give me a hundred bucks to come with him I'd probably run screaming the other way.

Infiltrators Katana visible before unlocked
Sure, why not. Might be a bit of a pain to rework the art assets for something pretty minor though.

Make bodies stay until agents left the area/limit is reached
I could see this opening the door to some very nasty memory leaks though. It would be cool, but it might cause more trouble than it is worth.

More blood
Sure why not.

Weapon attachments are not visible
Again, time and art assets. Same deal as the Katana except moreso since there are a lot more weapon mods. Same deal with the cybernetic implants. I think it might be a pretty tall order for such a small team.

Health bars at mouse over
This could vanish entirely and I wouldn't care one whit. Depending on how it's coded though it might be an all or nothing thing. Get rid of civi healthbars you might also be going into firefights blind. Might actually be a cool upgrade or piece of cybergear though.

Dirty lense/fog effect in the clone menu
I think this is an effect to simulate the fact that you are controlling your doods remotely. It also probably helps hide any rough spots around the models. Lots of games do this to one degree or another.

X-Ray/Transparency effect for NPCs
Would be a pain if it applied to red NPC's though. It doesn't bug me enough to worry about.

Silly NPC names
So you're saying I shouldn't have named my PC Bumpy Mc. Squigglebottoms? :p seriously though I never even pay attention to the names, probably because the only place you see them is on the clone screen. Some of them are even kinda witty. I came across Jombie Zesus the other day. I just sorta assumed they were 'streetnames' which helps account for the ridiculousness.

Made me laugh.

Thanks for your input.

Make NPCs react to bodies
Would be nice and add a very welcome challenge
Add ability to drag bodies
That goes with the reaction to bodies
Unlock new skills only near beacon
Yup. People are already complaining about having to "wait for money/everything", I doubt it would be well appreciated but I'm for it. But I think the relay beacon proximity is the best option here. Maybe if different difficulties are implemented it could be use there.
Scanning (Y) should drain energy
Yup.
Let us select the weapons of all agents without drawing them
Yup. Yup yup yup.
Make agents defend themselves better
I don't want to participate in this discussion for now. AKA I find it okay as it is, I can see improvements but no automation is not on my mind
Ability to name/rename a save game
Why not.
Optional tutorial
The ability to hide/delete the tutorial/popup messages would be enough for me
Researcher spam
It's okayish as it is, but I'd make researching waaaayy more difficult but that is just me. More researchers required. More time for each research. But that's just me. Basically: 1.5x number of researchers required for everything. Double research time for everything. 1 active researcher costs 1$/sec. Outsourcing stays at 3$. But then again, that's just me. A sweet balance for new players and veteran is always hard to do.

Cosmetics (All great addition but not needed for me, but why not if they are ever bored and don't know what to do?)
Infiltrators Katana visible before unlocked
Uh... yeah
Make bodies stay until agents left the area/limit is reached
Nice change, would add to the carnage feeling
More blood
Can never get enough blood. Unless plasma. replace blood with smoke. okay, blood + smoking skin.
Weapon attachments are not visible
True, I don't really care. The budget might not have allowed all of this. Would be a good addition if they ever get time to do it.
Health bars at mouse over
I'm okay with the whole UI, but it could use polishing all around.
Dirty lense/fog effect in the clone menu
Never bothered me, but I usually STRONGLY dislike bloom/noise/weird effect in menu. Somehow I'm okay with this game. I empathize though, an option to disable them at least in menu would be great. Weird.
X-Ray/Transparency effect for NPCs
I love the effect. Isn't there an option to disable it? Maybe it was in the Development Option menu that was removed just before release. Bring the menu back.
Silly NPC names
It's a good way to reward backers. They are already working on a freaking low budget. Anyway, it's a cyberpunk world, people goes on living with their nickname for name in this world. Deal with it :p

Excellent post.

The closest comparison I have come across so far is Satellite Reign = cyberpunk Commandos

^This is the biggest immersion killer for me so far.
I can see why you would remove this feature to improve performance (the body count from infinite spawns might crash the game) and to keep the gameplay simple but the tension is lost when guards stroll past fresh corpses.
Laiders72 Aug 31, 2015 @ 3:46am
The skilling up in proximity to beacons I could get behind.

However, I think more waiting in the game without giving you other things to do, particularly waiting that disables an agent, would be bad deisgn. I have just alt-tabbed out a few times and watched or read something for a few minutes while research ticks on. Adding more waiting to then actually be able to equip and use those augs would be maddening. It works in games like X-COM because you have a base and you have recruitable teams of soldiers. You're running a military campaign and so you always have something else to do and it opens up new strategic considerations. X is my best soldier so I want them on the frontlines but I unlocked this really awesome gene mod that perfect for them etc.

Satellite Reign is not that sort of game. It's a real-time tactics game set in a single city. I have one of each type of agent so sending, say, my hacker to get upgraded eliminates about a quarter of my fire-power and prevents me from hacking. Why on earth would I do a mission at that moment? Particularly as I tend to aug and retool my agents in bulk mission by mission. Why add dead time to the game when it is already easy for a player to accidentally create dead time for themselves?

World-scan using energy

I could take or leave. as others have said. World scan makes things like the field of view of cameras and enemies less clear and I personally find it slightly unpleasant to use for prolonged periods of time (anything beyond say 5 mins) so I already use it to, well, scan. I guess if it was suddenly implemented now I would find it very irritating for a while until I got used to it.

Rest all seems good to me.
