Performance issues / Stuttering
I've been having a stuttering issue for a while now and I'm not entirely sure if its 'normal' or if there's something wrong with my PC / FTD. It's more noticable while building (especially in the designer) but I get a 1-2 second stutter every 5 seconds or so. I seem to have this issue with most ship designs regardless of size, everything from 60K - 300K+. It's also present during a majority of my ship battles. I've tried running the game on the lowest settings (Normally set on Fantastic) and the issue still persists. My CPU isn't the greatest but I wouldn't imagine that it would bottleneck that much.

Win 7 HP
I5 4690K @3.50GHz
Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 MoBo
Asus GTX 1070 STRIX
HyperX FURY 16GB DDR3

-Happens regardless of if I'm mirroring or not
-The stutter is sometimes seen in the main menu during the background battles
-Game cache is fine
-The PC itself runs everything else fine, no other issues and not running hot.
-Usually chrome is open but I've had the issue with no other applications running

Anyone else have this problem and were you able to fix it?

When building large ships the game will stutter every 15 seconds for me when placing a lot of blocks at a time. Battles arent really bad for me so i dont know whats wrong.

my specs are FX-9590 @4.7 GHZ Base with 5.1GHZ Boost
GTX Titan X 12GB (EVGA card)
16GB of Corsair Platinum (top shelf ram, like $350 dollars for 2 sticks when i bought them)
4TB HDD
and an ASUS Crosshair V Formula Z (Best AM3+ MB out there)

Your specs are good but this game is being switched to MultiThread/Core optimization.
Im willing to bet its because its an i5 and it cant hyper thread those 4 cores. My CPU is AMD but it is an 8Core which is probably why my system gets such high FPS. Maybe OC your CPU

Well FPS usually isn't an issue for me either it's just the stuttering a random times that bothers me. I'll see what I can do in terms of OC'ing and if that remedies my problems.

if your ships are 60k blocks plus, this will probably persist until processor optimization is improved.

Yeah I figured that much, oh well. Thanks anyways dudes!

guys i have a strange issue my amd a8 7410 apu runs the game better than my fx 8300 and rx 550 what is with this?

I am Nercoing this post a long time afterwards, because I'm having the exact same problem as the OP, only post release. It cannot be the ship's size because the boat I'm working on is smaller than another ship that does not have the issue. The only difference between the two ships is the stutter one has an atlantic bow and the other one has a basic slope bow.

To answer the stuttering problem, it has to do with the fact that From the Depths only uses one core of your processor, not all of them. Until a proper multi-thread update is released, this problem will always be here.

100% accurate.
Eudaimonia Mar 7, 2022 @ 3:38am
Barely 10% accurate. It does a lot of multithreading, but there is a limit to how much can be done that way.
Ori Mar 7, 2022 @ 4:14am
There isn't any multi-threading because the last time the devs tried to implement multi-threading to the game, it broke everything and they had to remove it.
Eudaimonia Mar 7, 2022 @ 4:21am
Pretty much every other changelog over the last year contains some form of "added multithreading to this system".
Ori Mar 7, 2022 @ 4:56am
Yes, but not actual multi-threading. The game still takes 1 core to run and doesn't use any other cores. I know this because when I spawn 2 of my dreadnoughts and have them fight with settings set to max, the usage of the CPU for FTD goes as high as 28% while I get a brilliant example of a PowerPoint presentation at 2 FPS. Meanwhile my CPU's actual usage only gets to 30% because of chrome being open along with steam and discord.

@Eudaimonia What I was talking about was the game engine itself not being multi-threaded. What you are talking about is certain calculations and other aspects of the game to make it run faster, but the game engine itself only uses 1 core, thus it is not multi-threaded.
Eudaimonia Mar 7, 2022 @ 6:13am
Ah yes, this is true. There is one main thread, which is true for most games.
Draba Mar 7, 2022 @ 10:03am
The cpu-intensive parts of the game(buoyancy, detection, AI aiming, ...) are generally running on their own threads on separate cores (OS decides exact distribution). CPU usage won't go to 100% precisely because CPU isn't the limit. GPU, memory, whatever else is.

Would've been trivial to check, just open resource monitor while FtD is running then stop FtD.
