Fish should be able to breed in the wild.
I read a comment from a developer in another thread (which I can't find now of course) that they didn't want fish to re-spawn because they felt it would discourage exploration (Personally I think that is silly, since bases are more likely to discourage exploration than anything) However, keeping with that idea why not let them breed?

The idea is that fish don't just 'respawn' but there has to be two of them of the same species in fairly close proximity to spawn fry. It would not only be more realistic, it would be too slow to be usable as a constant food source, and allow you to, over time, rebuild 'dead zones' with little effort for the player (if you over fish you would have to transplant new parents).

As an added mechanic you could have it so that certain areas are only hospitable to certain fish (likely the fish that spawn there initially). So you can't transplant a spade fish to the starting zone because, reasons (make one up, maybe the water is too warm or cold or acidic, trust me fish are very sensitive to water conditions).

I think the possibility of overfishing an area is an interesting one but shouldn't be permanent and this would certainly fix that problem. The lifeless zones are a major hit to the beauty of this game and I see it as a major problem.

Fish respawn constantly: dev was bullshitting you.

What's insane is surface fish still happily swimming around at ~600 metres down, lava level.

If you're going to do realism, I'd go for the easy ones. You know, spawns in vertical X axis layers n all.

p.s.

Why no Octopus? Or Squid? Or things close to them?

:sad panda:

Yes, they do.

If you want me to dump code, I can.

Suffice to say, Fish respawn, constantly.

What the ♥♥♥♥ are you people smoking?

Fish currently do not respawn, at least not based on my recent playthrough.

The exceptions are in the large fish tank (water park) and Hoopfish spawn around creepvines planted in the planters. Both of these are unique to experimental.

On a side note: It would be nice if we could harvest Reapers for food. Think how long the food would last!

Without refrigeration... not long.

I have to agree that fish need to be able to breed in the wild, i am now at my 11th hour of gameplay and the safe shallows are really dead, not because of me but because of stalkers.
The immersive feeling is somewhat gone.

There also is only one stalker left in the kelp forest next to my base all the others are gone (maybe killed themselfes i've seen them fight over metal).
There also is only 1 gasopod left in the whole map don't know where the others went.

When i release fish that i breed in my giant tanks they swim to the X Y Z coordinates 0, 0, 0
which is 25 meters away from my base at 0 depth looks really wierd.

Didn't notice yet the fish don't respawn. That's really too bad. I don't want to end up with dead zones. Please respawn fish, devs!

No, it is not. We are talking about fish breeding in the wild, not in the aquarium.

No, fish dont respawn. And please, keep the language clean. We have children viewing these forums.

We want people to explore the world. IN the upcoming large aquarium update you'll be able to hatch and breed fish, and you can then re-introduce them back into the wild if stocks are depleted.
