The troubled future of Subnautica
UWE messed up. They had everything going for them coming out of EA until this. They fired a loyal employee for his personal beliefs and in so doing rendered their game explicitly political.

The sandbox crafting gameplay is now completely secondary to the status symbol of owning it or not owning it. You see this pattern over and over the past few days, in the reviews, in the boards, people who have played since EA wanting a refund, people who bought it just to tick off the people complaining about the firing yet will never play the game.

It's a mess. But within that chaos is opportunity.

A milquetoast response at this point would be suicide. More game journalist driven demands will come down upon them, and UWE will forever be dancing to the tune of these people trying to catch up.

UWE's best move is to seize the opportunity. Their game is explicitly political now, that can't be turned back. They must OWN it. If minorities would not work with a man who disagrees with them, why would they work for gamers who would? They need to kick the gamers who agree with the sound guy out of their game.

This is bold, and must be handled with care. There is no policy or precedent for unilateral revocation of a game. This is why it must be implemented as a change in terms of service, and refunds should he offered for those who do not agree to abide by these new terms. Once that window is passed, the new terms would go into effect with extreme prejudice against those who own Subnautica and are prejudiced.

With this change, Subnautica would be nearly an art piece; gaming's first truly anti-racist, pro-diversity game. As we are reliably informed, this would be a huge trade up in audience bases: categorically rejecting a tiny minority of racists for an overwhelming majority of progressive gamers. It is a win win by this analysis, with the added benefit of making UWE a company truly ready for diversity whenever they get around to hiring a more diverse staff. No minority should EVER have to make games for people who say bad things about the 3rd world.

I understand this is not what most of us expected from Subnautica, but it would hardly be the first time. Some of us expected terrain deformation too. It is only natural for the idea of Subnautica to evolve as the reality changes. This is how games become truly great, by finding opportunities within misfortune.

Give you credit for staying power WS - you're a dying breed around here now - let's see if you can keep it up through the weekend (please No).

No. If they let it simmer, it'll be over in a couple of days. Every stupid socio-political news dies the exact same way.

As a valued member of the Subnautica community, same as you, I fail to see why I should take discussion of the game anywhere other than the official forum.

I've made my terms explicit. For as long as I remain an owner of Subnautica and thus a member of this community, I shall contribute to its well being. I want nothing but the best for a product I have invested in after all. This post is the start of phase two.

I disagree based on the attempted review bomb, game is going to be fine.

Each individual event dies in a few days. But it helps to look at the big picture. The creator of Earthworm Jim never escapes his political stances. It becomes a story every time he brings something up, despite them never seeping into his work.

The wheel always turns and grabbing a powerful identity play like this can only be to UWE's benefit if they have the will to seize it. They've already taken the first step!

Precisely my point. These people are a tiny minority. Had they kept the sound guy on, the results would have been devastating. Just think of the stratospheric levels of success they will have when they appeal to the real power of gaming. Kick the racists out, side with anti-racism, and you'll be seeing 2 million sales in a month, easily. And the tail of that will be even bigger. You guys are excited for just an arctic DLC? With that kinda cash flow they could make entire planets of DLC

I get it man you really want to be a political figure. But come on it’s a steam forum, not the senate floor and let’s be honest you aren’t some philosopher that is published (unless you are id read it for a bit). Let’s just chill out a bit.

This is my speed, dunno about the dlc yet. I was floored by the quality at the price point. If they want 25 for a new bio naaa I’ll pass. I don’t care about the political angle

there is always two sides to the story. I always consider the source double check and never post crap on a gaming forum.
