To Avoid issues, please always run the game directly from the Steam Client without any specific launch parameters unless otherwise stated.
Steps to try
Note
- Windows 64-bit is Required to run the game.
- Windows 7 SP1 or higher is required to run the game.
1) Install these 2 Microsoft Packages
- http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784
- http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=35
We automatically install pre-requisites of the game when it is installed but it's possible they may have installed badly, such as if a previous installation was found or conflicted with the new one.
To verify these are installed, go to Add Or Remove programs via Windows Control Panel and look for
Microsft Visual C++ Redistributable 2013
Microsoft Direct X SDK (June 2010)
The DirectX redist should appear in either the Add or Remove programs list as above or in your Start Menu > All Programs you should see it
2) Verify Game Install Files Via Steam
- Navigate to your Library in Steam
- Right Click Eden Star :: Destroy - Build - Protect and select "Properties"
- Select the "Local Files" Tab from the top of the popup window
First:
- Click "Verify Integrity Of Game Cache" and follow the sub menus through Steam
- Try running the game again
Then if it isn't working still:
- Click "Delete Local Game Content" instead, and then Re-Install Eden Star
- Try running the game again
With this done, Re-Attempt step 2. And when reinstalling the game, the prerequisites should be installed fresh.
3) Check that your graphics card has recognized Eden Star.
- Right click on your desktop and select NVidia Control Panel
- Select Manage 3D settings from the panel on the left
- In Program Settings here, is Eden Star listed?? if not then click add, and navigate to the .exe file here...
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Eden Star Pre-Alpha\EdenGame\Binaries\Win64
- If any Optimus settings exist here, make sure they are not set to Intergrated graphics
4) Change NVidia Control Panel Settings
- Right click anywhere within the Desktop.
- Click on the NVIDIA Control Panel, which will open up in a window. Below is a picture of the NVIDIA Control Panel.
http://tinypic.com/r/12515wl/8
- Once in the NVIDIA Control Panel, select "Manage 3D settings" which is under the heading of 3D Settings. A picture of the new window is below.
http://i60.tinypic.com/2us8spe.jpg
- Select the "Program Settings" tab in this new window.
- In this new window, click on the drop down menu and select Eden Star. If you cannot find it, then uncheck the "Show only programs found on this computer" tick box just below the drop down menu then select Eden Star.
- In the following pictures I will show you the settings that need to be set.

- Lastly a thing to keep in mind, the small section with these options will sometimes reset to the top, make sure not to scroll as this will change the program which you are customising. Ensure that you are always customising Eden Star.
5) Edit the Game Default Use Settings
Navigate to your GameUserSettings.ini file located here
"C:\Users\*Your User Name*\AppData\Local\EdenGame\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor\"
In here overwrite your settings section with these generic ones
[/script/edengame.edengamegameusersettings]
ResolutionSizeX=0
ResolutionSizeY=0
LastUserConfirmedResolutionSizeX=0
LastUserConfirmedResolutionSizeY=0
WindowPosX=-1
WindowPosY=-1
bUseDesktopResolutionForFullscreen=True
FullscreenMode=0
LastConfirmedFullscreenMode=0
Run the game again and the engine should pick up your settings again
LASTLY
Try installing the included vcredist files and the Tech Demo which comes shipped with the game
- Go to your gamefolder 'Eden Star Pre-Alpha' which should be located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Eden Star Pre-Alpha
- Open the subfolder '_CommonRedist' then 'vcredist' and then '2012' or '2013'. You have to open both anyway so just pick one first and later the other one.
- Each of those folders ('2012' and '2013') contain three files. You'll need two of them: vcredist_x64.exe and vcredist_x86.exe.
- Doubleclick on vcredist_x64.exe. A window will appear which looks like this: http://puu.sh/gmP2F/ed4db96a9d.png
- Click on 'Repair'. When the setup has finished it will tell you once to restart your computer. You don't have to.
- Repeat step 4-5 with the other three setups.
- Start the game and cross your fingers that it worked for you. If not try the next method.
In your gamefolder is a subfolder called 'UE3 Combat Tech Demo'.
Open it and you should find two files. A 'ReadMe.txt' and 'EdenInstall-EdenDemo_5.7.exe'.
Start the 'EdenInstall-EdenDemo_5.7.exe' and let the setup install the files.
After the setup has completed you can try to start the game again.
Extra Lastly
Windows Event Viewer Logs
In Windows
1) Go to the Start Menu
2) Type "Event Viewer" and open it
3) In the Event Viewer Window, select Windows Logs
4) Run the game again from Steam and get the crash to happen
5) Look back at the Event Viewer, you should see under Windows Logs, Application and System, there should be an error in one or both of these which hopefully can give us some extra information about the crash, could you please screenshot or copy paste the errors found.
Even More Lastlier
It's posible a black screen/unable to run error could be caused by some missing/corrupt video codecs, so please see if the steps in this post has any effect.

"EdenGame doesn't work. Windows can search for options"
When you search for options it only says that Windows can not solve the problem.
All drivers are updated. Everything meets the requirements.
OR
The game simply crashes before doing much of anything
Please follow these steps to try and fix the issue, otherwise post here and let us know some more specific details and we can look into it for you
https://trello.com/c/jga6pnTl/1072-unable-to-run-game-please-try-these-troubleshooting-steps
Please let us know if this helps or does not solve the problem and we will look into it further for you.
Thank you for your patience on this matter.
Does anyone have a fix for this issue or does my computer have a problem? I have 8gb of ram, windows 7 home premium service pack 1 , 4ghz dual processor CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti.
It may be to do with the prerequisites required by Unreal 4 but we need to investigate further. Are you having this issue with any other games at all?
Do you have all of the latest windows updates installed and the latest drivers?
So sorry for this - we'll aim to get this looked over as soon as possible.
I've moved this issue to the Bugs forum for you guys
Can I ask - have you purchased the game directly from Steam?
Are you running the game through the Steam client?
Have you launched the game via a shot cut?
Can you right click on the Eden Star game in your Steam library, navigate to Properties, click Local Files tab and tell me what the Disk Usage is please?
Please find the directory :: C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Eden Star Pre-Alpha\EdenGame\Binaries\Win64
and then list the files within this folder - there may be one or two.
Size 2.46 GB (2,648,670,607 bytes)
Size on Disk 2.46 GB (2,649,096,192 bytes)
Files in Win64:
EdenGame
I have tried launching Eden Star both with and without steam and I have purchased directly from steam
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784
This may help - if you still require the redistributables
I know that the team have been very busy (and a few of the guys are ill!) but we will continue to look into this one!
Thanks again for your support
When this file isn't in the directory a clean one is created when you run the game, however uninstalling the game from steam leaves these files intact.
