Serious Sam 4

Serious Sam 4

Why Doom Eternal will make Serious Sam 4 even more successful.
Doom Eternal is by no means a mediocre or even bad game. It's fast, action-packed, and will keep you hooked onto it from beginning to end. Even though it doesn't look all that different from Doom 2016 aside from environment variety, it still looks amazing on low settings too. It is, in every respect, an amazing game.

But it is not a classic first-person shooter.

Doom Eternal, in order to become the ultimate push-forward combat game, has ditched many traditional FPS elements to make sure people will only play the way the developers want them to play. That is not a bad thing too; the "right way" to play Doom Eternal is fun and addictive, and I respect the developers intention behind most design choices.

However, it is not the experience that people hoping for a new good classic FPS are hoping for.

Classic FPS isn't about doing advanced parkour maneuvers or very intense resource management. Sure, rocket jump exists, but it is rarely a necessity in single-player FPS of the past unless you were trying to speedrun. Ammo hoarding is a natural occurrence that allows players to use their favorite guns for extended periods of time, at least until certain enemies give them a reason to switch. Most importantly, trying to get up close and personal to rip and tear enemies will only result in yourself being ripped and torn in most FPS from the 90s. Sometimes you just gotta hang back and snipe enemies from a distance, something that id Software realized with the Railgun in Quake 2.

Serious Sam is not a classic FPS either.

It does not feature the labyrinthine level design and keycard hunts of actual old-school FPS, not that it's a bad thing. Serious Sam has its own identity separate to that of the original Doom and Quake. Even so, in this day and age, Serious Sam 4 might provide the kind of experience similar to the one sought after by fans of Duke Nukem 3D and its ilk, the kind of experience that Doom Eternal rejected in order to be completely push-forward combat-centric. That is why those disappointed by Doom Eternal's evolution of the genre may find Serious Sam 4 to be more to their liking. Not too boring, not too intense. Just right.

Assuming Croteam doesn't do some dumb sheet like psychic tentacle ladies that forces you to take cover and hide, that is.

I like your perspective, Pika.
I buy any fps that has a satisfying shooting and killing mechanic. I don't care much about anything else. FPS genre fans are pretty... loyal, simple minded.
I see good gunplay, I buy.
I agree with Pika.

Call of Duty, Battlefield 2, etc, All got satisfying gunpplay,. Are they oldschool shooters?
Rico, please don't spam like rad.

CoD and BF2 aren't old school. There's your answer.

I'm saying, there are more criteria for being oldschool, than just having "great gunplay"

I think what Pootis is saying is, you can multi-quote in a single message.

There's new stuff, there's stuff that you've seen. Of course, that's how it goes when sequels are concerned.
All enemies have been remade, some new ones added. Same goes for weapons.

As for the preview, you'll see it. It's just a matter of time.

Didn't get Doom Eternal because while I like the stories Bethesda tells with their games, they kind of suck as shooters. DOOM drove me ♥♥♥♥ing crazy because I wanted to shoot demons, not ♥♥♥♥ing punch them for bullets. Why am I punching things for bullets? Just dump bullets at me and throw a ♥♥♥♥ ton of enemies at me to use them on.

DOOM was pretty, and it honestly tried and it's not a bad game - but I miss UT99 style twitch shooters, and I started installing SS3 again and noticed SS4 is coming out.

So I am happy. Thank you, Croteam, for just giving me guns, bullets and a horde of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s to use them on.
