Workshop Downloads Causing Steam To Crash
Can someone help me? Everytime Steam loads, it has some Cities Skylines Workshop content to download but the moment it tries to download it, the download gets stuck and it causes Steam client to not respond (steam bootstrapper). It then force closes after 5 minutes of being non responsive. I have set the game to not auto download new updates but it ignores this. This is a pain because I have to quickly pause the update/download or else Steam would crash.

I have tried verifying the games contents, clearing download cache, deleting files in the download folder, reinstalling steam (deleting all files except my games folder, userdata and steam.exe) but nothing has helped.

In the workshop_log.txt file in Steam folder, it says the following:

[2017-12-06 03:21:00] [AppID 431960] Delaying next workshop updated 5 minutes

It originally only said access denied for those content numbers but I have since deleted those particular files from the workshop folder and it still says access denied but now also says missing content.

This can happen after game patches. You just need to wait for the workshop to be updated by the authors.

In the mean time, just temporarily launch the game with the -noWorkshop flag until things are resolved.

You may have to launch a new game. If you play an old game, be sure to save it with a new name so you don't overwrite your old one and destroy it. Just in case things go bad.

This happened to me, it takes some time but it will download. Just have to wait it out. ++ I have like 4k assets + mods so it took well over an hour for me. Hope everything works out :ccknight:

Stop preventing Steam and the game from verifying your custom content.
Stop manually deleting anything. Remove your subscription to the content first via the Workshop, verify that has been done and then remove any remaining files manually.

It's getting to the point now where I can't use my Steam or any games. As soon as I load Steam, the Cities SKylines workshop is on the download list, I cannot stop it as there is no cancel or remove button. It will then cause Steam to crash with a few seconds. If this is due to an update, it is not viable to wait for the content to be updated as lots of content in the workshop has been abandoned. The downloads tab once showed me that there is 7GB of downloads to do for the workshop (usually it crashes before even showing how much there is to download. Something seriously is wrong here. I am not sure what to do. What logs do I need to go into to see what is causing this? The only way to stop Steam crashing is to go into offline mode. Even running Windows in safe mode with networking causes Steam to crash.

About removing my subscription from the workshop, some of the content i have installed is no longer in the workshop. How do I know exactly what content is causing the crashing? For now I have uninstalled Cities Skylines and my Steam has been fine.

Check each and every workshop item and make sure they are up to date.

I'd start with mods first, as assets are less likely to have issues. Maybe RICO assets.

But read when it was last updated, read the descriptions, read the comments, and read the discussions.

Thanks for your suggestion but I have thousands of mods for this game, it's not viable to go through each and every one. As I said, I have some assets tghat when I perform a search, no longer appear in the workshop. Since I have 7.1GB of workshop content that it says needs redownloading, I really don't see myself narrowing it down to the specific cause. For now, I have uninstalled the game and contacted Steam support. I will take a look at the mods sometime but the assets, I have too many.

I have thousands too, but I do make sure I check each one.
If you subscribed to more than you are able to manage, then simply do not do so.

I had all mods and assets working fine a few days ago, I was playing the game fine without issue and have subscribed to no new content since then. I do not know why all of a sudden this has happened

What is your RAM capacity?
Deadman Dec 7, 2017 @ 2:29pm
16GB. I've been running the game fine before, what does RAM have to do with Steam client crashing when attempting to download Workshop content?

16GB is only sufficient memory for around 800 unpacked assets, and up to 1300 at most, but you say you have thousands, which means the remainder is being written to a page file on your hard drive. You've been lucky but now you are definitely out of memory and that's the issue.
Solution: reduce your custom content to within your RAM capacity or upgrade your RAM. For thousands of assets you'll need 32GB.

You are not understanding grapplehoeker... my steam client is crashing without the game even loaded. It crashes when it tries to preallocate steam workshop files in the download tab of the steam client NOT inside the game itself. This has nothing to do with RAM at all. As soon as I load Steam, it crashes within 10 seconds unless I am in offline mode, then it's fine.

This happened to me before, just leave your computer on until the download is complete, do NOT click anything because that will automatically make it stop responding, everything WILL download you just have to let it. Trust me it happened 2x because my pc went on a tangent crashing randomly and causing CS to uninstall itself, i was forced to sit through the re-download of all workshop items.

As I said in my original message Sandman, "the download gets stuck and it causes Steam client to not respond (steam bootstrapper). It then force closes after 5 minutes of being non responsive." so it will close on it's own 5 minutes or so later, disappearing off my taskbar too.

What errors do you get? What are you doing during this time? Are you giving it enough time?

I usually switch to another task as it can take a long time to download several gigabyte of data.

If I leave it on the Steam UI, it seems to take forever and even seems to pause often. but when I shove it to the background, it finishes in short order.
