Mines and mining
Is anyone else unable to get mines to work? Whenever I place them, they obstruct the AI's path and they won't step on them. Is it poor engineering skill making it visible to them? An AI quirk?

That actually is a very good question.
I wouldnt put it beyond the AI to outright cheat(like they tend to do with throwing grenades while your band of thieves is hiding).

I never found any utility to mines; too much effort required to make them work, versus much easier method of shooting/stabbing. It's been a while though...can you use mines to booby trap doors or only grenades/explosives?

I only ever use mines to make big holes in the wall,as the game doesn't design them as demolition charges they require encouragement to set off, mostly through grenades,I always use my most explosive mines on albert koch's mansion, hardest mission in my opinion.

I gave up on using mines too. If there was an open doorway it was usually safer to keep an eye on it from a distance and shoot anyone that came through. If it was a closed door, it was better to booby-trap it with a grenade.

They were potentially useful for fence-line's and blowing a hole in them .. but IIRC, with the effort taken to set it off, it was usually easier just to throw a grenade. And, at the end of the day, six people with sniper-rifle's can blow a hole in just about anything that can't be booby-trapped.

So yeah, you might be right that enemies can spot them .. so maybe they're only good for blocking an open doorway. I always have an engineer, but I can't think when the last time was I got them to plant a mine.

I've had a problem with the AI seemingly knowing doors are booby-trapped now, too. Do they fall for them for you guys? Maybe my engineer isn't good enough at hiding them yet.

Nevermind; I just got the AI to trigger a few door traps. I'm going to assume my engineering skill just wasn't good enough.
Yeah, I never worked out if the AI was smart enough to spot booby-trapped doors. ..I usually got just anyone in my team to do the booby-trapping, and I still had a pretty good success rate. ..maybe it's because it's hard to spot if the trap is on the other side of the door from the AI soldier? But I'm not sure if Silent Storm considers things in such detail.

I used to do booby-trapped doors a lot in the German Laboratory (the one with the annoying scientist lady), as I found that mission quite hard until I knew the layout better. ..That was my first enounter with soldiers with the FG-42, which surprised me with how much damage it could do at a distance. I got all my guys to start using that gun right away, instead of the Beretta or Suomi SMG. :)

You can use mines to booby-trap doors to make sure AI won't come through them. You know, like that door-blocker-thingie in SWAT 4.

I used mines several times: in the british lab, before script scene of reinforcement arrive (it really works and effective!) and at the beginning of nazi campaigh, I planted mines in stealth mode on the way of patrol at some missions and AI didnt notice it. As a result, some kills without spotting our group

I just found a trick to get enemies to set off mines. What you must do is plant a mine behind a closed door so that they don't notice it until they've walked through. They'll open the door and stand on the mine before they see it. Your engineering skill doesn't matter, you can do it with anyone and it will work almost every time.

They do spot them actually, ususally however unless you over level, chances are they will either spot them the second they have eye contact on the object, or they will spot it the second they are beside the object, which makes it look very suspiciously like they are cheating, but they do spot them, high level scout and sniper enemies usually spot these things easily.

Its still doesnt matter much when you use the most high powered explosives to place traps around an entire building, shoot one of them and watch 50 explosions totally level a complex, engineers with a very high hide level can completly trap and ruin EVERYTHING.

Hmm, maybe you dont quite get what I was explaining. Check out this video I made of how to get the AI to set off mines almost every time (no mods):

no i get that, i just meant in general use, not door traping.
KittyKittyBang 25 sierpnia 2014 o 3:24
Hmmm... Interesting mine video. I'm going to have to play around with those a bit more in my current game. I might start using them regularly even. :)

this was the most lively discussion we shall see for some time unfortunately :(
