Solo runs : who s doing them ?
The title gives it all away. A few days ago I started to play solo and its lots of fun. First I wanted to do solo+permadeath playthrough but there are many freak situations and bugs in the game or am I just not good enough ?
Who of you is doing solo plays and which class do you pick and of course anybody playing permadeath ?

I use a medic. Those skills are GOLDEN.

The medic ? Not even though about picking the medic. I got to take a look at its skills.
Ok I can see its potential. Abilities like resisting or scoring crits are very usefull and of course you have the healing abilities. What he is missing completly are the detection skills. I really depend on them. Very often I hide around a corner start to make some noice and then listen and wait for the enemy coming around.
But atm I make no progress in ss because I am destracted by another old game: swkotor
When I have managed to bring balance to the force I go and try the medic. :)

Huh.. I hadn't thought of the medic either. I always have one in my team, but never the main character. I either go for a sniper, and have four snipers, one medic and one engineer. It's a fun combination, and I can split into two reasonably well-rounded teams. But snipers are fragile, so if you're having no fun getting caught-out on interrupts and badly hurt, there's always the scout. So my other favourite is to choose a scout, and have two scouts, two snipers, a medic, and an engineer. The extra toughness and spot/interrupt skills of the scout make missions a lot more survivable if you enjoy sneaking up close. Or if you just want to be able to get around a corner without being interrupted every time by the guy who's camping there.

Generally I like using offence as my best defence, and go mostly snipers. Their spot skills, shooting distance, look-for-free, and ability to make critical hits at crazy distances is a lot of fun. Their fragility is a good challenge, and I've always got a medic around should they get badly hurt.

Permadeath is hard though. This game can be so unpredictable on the harder levels. If one of my guys gets jumped and put out of action, I like being able to get back to base and revive them. They take so long to train up, and some are quite hard to replace with anyone as good .. I'm not sure how well I could handle not being able to get them back.
I like Scout or Sniper, would love to play an engineer, but raising their skills is almost impossible I find, simply because you cannot get enough engineering items to use in missions to raise skills ...

I also prefer to use 3-4 soldiers rather than the 6, Kind of like a SAS squad, 1 Sniper, 1 Medic, and 2 Scouts ... tis fun

My favourite character and the one that I believe suits solo runs best is Soldier. Very versatile, capable of learning medicine enough to sustain himself, a great shot with automatic weapons and good with grenades. I didn't experience any problems in my walkthrough with a solo Soldier and would like to do that again, especially now that I got the game on Steam.

Just started a solo run with a sniper, but it's very hard

I might try a solo grenadier for ♥♥♥♥♥ n giggles, but i imagine im going to run into problems with my explosive supply.

You could try some mods.
Grenade Range is nice and some of the mods I guess it was the DieHard mods increase the difficulty and ai is carrying more grenades and is using them more frequently.
With this mod you should never have problems with supply but the battles are much harder. More reloading save games cause grenades come flying out of nowhere knocking you out instantly.

I think the Scout might be a good way to go. They're tough, so if they get caught off-guard they won't faint at the first sight of a paper-cut like a sniper will. And they're pretty good with sneaking close and using suriken or throwing-knives to take out people in a building silently. (much easier to handle people when it's only one at a time.) :)

I'm not sure I'm brave enough to try it with just a single player though. Maybe a pair? Like an evil, stealthy, tag-team ninja pair. :)

I was wrong about my explosive supply, apparently one of the random encounters has 5 enemies all nicely clumped together, and they drop anywere from 2 to 8 grenades, just one decent grenade and afew throwing knives and they go down effortlessly.
Scouts are good for it imo. They can f**k up some s**t. Grenadier is an army of one also.

Grenadiers are cool. But they can be caught off-guard:

I go for stealth and sniping, when I can. My cousin goes for explosions, full machine-guns, and destruction. ..worked great until he got caught in that random UK mission with the stealthy shuriken-wielding guys. They cut his team up real good, while he fired aimlessly at people he couldn't spot.

He shoulda just carpet bombed the map then with explosives.

He did a lot of yelling at the game as they slowly wiped him out. I was enjoying it too much to lend any advice. I don't think he had enough explosives - rather he loaded up with magazines with the aim of shooting through any trouble. I like my explosives .. I never leave home without them. ;)

From my experience stealth is invaluablem therefore Scout all the way. If you can sneak up to behind an enemy with a Weber (allies) pistol aim for the head and easy kill. I know people like silenced weapons but the Weber is one of my favorites. Anyways I've played solo pretty far but pretty much once Panzerkleins are introduced you're screwed. So, as mentioned before, go for a 2-4 person squad for a solo-similar feel but still the ability to complete the game
