How the hell does the relic map work? so anoying

Yeah it's weird. It's not a map. Run toward the relic by pointing your camera in the correct direction (camera direction appears on the "map" as an arrow pointing from your face), and running forward in that direction. Then, once you get close, you'll see how it works.

Also, only one relic, the nearest, appears on the map at any one time.

It's more of a compass than a map. The onscreen map itself doesn't correlate at all with the area you're in. Just try to figure out how to get your arrow facing the relic and moving towards it. When you're close, the map will zoom in / out to give a sort of hot/cold effect. It actually requires thought rather than just pointing you to the secrets, I enjoy it.
