Arguable. People with better hardware gets nice grass and stuff while in game i constantly see people asking how to disable grass making it easier to see people. so it goes both ways.
That's the choice people will have to make. Just because I want increased view distance I shouldn't have to be limited by someone else with a lesser machine. Now if the draw distance was a server side variable that could be enforced then I would just simply find servers that don't limit you in this way then it wouldn't be an issue and it would be up to the player joining the server if they want to connect or not.
Another way would be to increase draw distance for everything BUT players, and have it at a fixed value so everyone has it the same. Allowing the increased distance for animals, resources, trees, rocks etc.
I shouldn't have to sacrifice quality just because people want to run the game on a toaster.
And/Or have a different kind of terrain render when reaching a certain altitude. Or another method relating to LOD is at a certain distance the object becomes a 2D sprite rather than an 3D object. SecondLife uses that technique and it works rather well.
I created a 4 story tall building on the mountain top, it should be somewhat visible everywhere with a clear line of sight. I've seen people create sky scrapers that touch the sky! So again, it's one thing to draw distance players, but massive objects like these should not pop out of existence.
YOu should be limited because it's a matter of fairness, not personal preference. THat's like saying i shouldn't have to play w/o cheats just because you dont like them. What the devs need to do is set a minimum distance for everyone, but limit that distance to current hardware. So people with slower machines will have to crank the graphics down in order to play or get new hardware.
Do what ArmA does, make it client side and let them decide where their draw distance should be.
