Alpha 17 console commands for FOV and View Distance
As some of you more astute players might have noticed the changes to the Options Interface made FOV setting go away and changed View Distance to 3 options.

I'm here to let you know both of these can be dealt with.
Let's go into some details.
By default the FOV is now 65 degrees without a menu to change it.
The 'High' setting for View Distance is 7 on the old scale.

Let's fix both of these.
First a default FOV 65, View Distance 'High' (7) screenshot.

Now that we have our stock Field Of View and View Distance let's make some changes.

Press F1 and open the console.
Type the following and hit enter after each
sg OptionsFieldOfViewNew 90
Close Console
NOTE: OptionsFieldOfViewNew has to be set every time the program is closed. It will stay going to main menu, but not across restarts. OptionFiedOfView is the old one that is no longer read.
To use this on a server one needs to do this at the Main Menu before joining the server.

Let's see how that looks.

That's not bad, but well, what about that view distance.
At the Main Menu (before loading save)
Press F1 and open the console.
Type the following and hit enter:
sg OptionsViewDistance 12
Close console, now load a game.

Let's see how that looks.
Here is a screenshot showing the same scene as the past 2 but with FOV 90 and View Distance 12.

Notice all the details that become visible when comparing these screenshots. On the right a player made structure on the shore. One can also see those little wood bushes, and lots of Stone mounds now. Just left of the middle and past the dock we can see another player made structure. Lastly take note of the island on the left. We can see more accurate terrain details, and 3rd player made structure that was not visible before.

NOTE: Changing video settings can and will override these changes and so the commands would need to be issued again.

Anyway, hope I've helped you enjoy some more.

ONE MORE THING: you might also notice I'm pushing near 60FPS in that screenshot using the ancient rig on my profile. :boss:

EDIT:

For playing online you will likely not be able to issue these commands on a server.
As such issue the commands at the main menu. Then join the server and FOV should carry over (not sure about view distance as I did not test that).

Changing the FOV in that settings-file does nothing for me

Yep, experienced as much myself.
For now I just did a macro on one of the G-Keys on the G15. Single press, sets my prefs, just annoying to have to do it each time.

Since A17 hit stable with no FOV slider, going to pin this for a bit.

what about multiplayer? server denies my commands...

Those settings are client based, it shouldn't matter if it's sp, mp or whatever. Where and when exactly are you trying to set those options?

Issue the commands at the main menu. Should carry over when joining server.

I'll add this info to the OP.

This explains the mild headaches I get from playing now.
This should have NEVER been removed from the Options tab.

God mode is severely bugged. With it enabled, whether it's by toggling it with the hotkey or actually going into the menu, it doesn't work. HP will just from near death to near full, unpredictably.

What does God Mode have to do with this thread about FOV and View Distance? -- And to be clear, no such experience here. You can still take enough fall damage even with God Mode active to kill yourself (or nearly so) but that is in no way unpredictable.

Any chance of you turning this into a mod? I already use your hud mod.

Unfortunately, unlike the Land claim Block count which was hooked up in code to be read from the XUi, the FOV setting OptionsFieldOfViewNew was not the last time I checked. As such adding it to the menu requires a code as well as XML mod.

TLDR: tried, not possible currently with XML only.

I set the FOV to 55 and it is quite fine now, thx again.
I set FOV to 90 and view distance to max and the melee 'sweet spot' feels good to me on my 27" wide screen monitor.

I suspect that someone playing on a 15" laptop with view distance set to minimum would have a different melee 'sweet spot' and thus melee combat would feel different to them.

If the Fun Pimps included FOV settings in the Options we would probably see fewer arguments between the 'melee sucks' versus 'melee is awesome' crowds.

Also, this thread refers to Alpha 17 and it might need to be updated to Alpha 18 to draw attention to it from people who might ignore it thinking it is outdated.

I even tried to modify the value in the Win10 registry, but it overwrote it when I restarted the game. So, I must always remember to use the console command and:

sg OptionsFieldOfViewNew 90
Only the host can make the fov command and when the host does make the command the fov change only happened to the host do you know the command so it works for everyone in the same game

Use the command before joining the server (you can issue it while at the main menu and as long as you do not open the video options menu it will stay applied).
