How to play co-op

Hi, ill keep this short.

How do I play with a friend of mine in co-op in a private game?

As in, we dont want to play on public servers. Do we need to rent a server just for us or... ?

No, you can host one locally. It's going to be somewhat painful on your PC though if you're not along the upper specs.

Start New Game -> Select "Survival MP" from the drop down menu

If your PC can handle it, go for random gen. If your PC is having trouble you could try Navezgane, but that map is kind of meh in my opinion.

New game -> Survival MP -> Multiplayer -> Private game -> add password -> hit start.
Make any exceptions needed in your firewall.
Forward ports in router if needed.

One of you (the one with the stronger PC) has to start a Survival MP map. Before launching, set the options to private game. It's in the "new game" menu. Also set a password or any friend can join.

Once the one hosting has spawned, the other has to right click the host in the steam overlay and select "join game" and enter the password when prompted.

Does the survival MP offer the same options to customize the server as dedicated servers do?
