Will the game ever become challenging again?
With patches and updates the game feels like its gotten consistently easier over and over. Is there any plan to ramp up the difficulty again at any point?

A new "feral sense" option is being worked on, so that zombies will detect you from farther away and zero in more aggressively. At the highest setting it will work the same as the blood moon. Biomes are also having gamestage scaling so dangerous/industrial areas will spawn more dangerous zombies relative to your level.
Yknow, you say it's gotten consistently easier...but it's the opposite, actually. It's quite a bit harder than it used to be, in most respects.. To the point that with A18 and the addition of the new injury system, they lowered the default difficulty by one step.

Only two things have gotten notably 'easier' over the last number of alphas, imo;
1: Food and water are a bit easier, in general, to acquire and maintain.
And
2: The temperature system rework, which arguably made it easier to deal with since it can no longer kill you and is easier to understand/manage.

What has changed significantly though, is your skill at the game. Your knowledge of the game. Your understanding of how to deal with the various situations you end up in.
I think we perceive it as "easier" because IMO the spawn levels have been nerfed compared to previous alphas. That way the world feels empty and only the POIs give you some real challenge. I started playing Darkness Falls and the 19.6 version uses 75 concurrent zombies spawned in the world. No time to sleep! I'm telling you. :reterrified:

There is a mod that increases the zombie spawn. Or you could try overhaul mods like Undead Legacy, Ravenhearst, War3zuk. All significantly harder than vanilla.

Shurenai is correct to point out that combat in A19 is more challenging than A16. There are fewer random (biome) spawns, but the enemies in general are individually more of a challenge. Enemy rage mode, more aggressive AI (vulture AI seems to best some people), and the player not being able to sprint backwards are objective examples.

And there are a number of difficulty settings, like enemy speed and enemy block damage to tweak when you get too comfortable.

In the end though, I agree the game has lost most combat challenge for me personally, but I recognize that's because I have a lot of hours into the game. What I do is try different builds and methods of approaching horde night while keeping the difficulty settings high.

Also bandits - enemies with smarter AI and.....guns.

Streamlined is the word that comes to my mind. Theyve removed alot of the busy work which for people like me who enjoy it, does indeed feel like things are easier. Zombies are harder, but surviving is easy. Things like gardening, finding complete weapons , no smell mechanic, ore thats everywhere and easy to spot etc etc. But I do agree, the only thing Im waiting for these days are the bandits or some random human survivors. For vets blood moons I think are done and have lost the appeal, its all about the wandering hordes that spawn randomly(in mods). Im interested to see how the feral sense thing turns out.

not sure you remember wellness but dp is so much less bad also 6 levels of protection and a tutorial plus making the crafting WAY simpler no longer needing sticks planks and logs as seperate things all meat being the same caves ins are harder to cause and less fatal feral wights cant spawn on you day 1 you pretty much never spawn in and oh look 3 dogs any more the animals are so much more plentifall and a few turrets can hold out against gs 150+ hordes without any issue whatsoever cant speak of much leter than about 200 cus i get bored and start again.

Again?
It looks like you started with A18. What exactly do you find less challenging now vs then?
Log in new single player game, told to craft bedroll, dog attacks, no escape, die. That is the biggest problem right now imo with difficulty. I imagine a new comer to the game will experience this and just uninstall refund.

When loading into the game at a player level lower than 5 (which all players are with a new game), it creates a zone within which zombies and other hostile entities literally cannot spawn. This zone expires after several ingame hours, When the player leaves the area, Or if the player enters a nearby POI.

So, If you spawn in, And literally follow the tutorial like a new player would, (That is to say, not running around like a pro and actually just punch the nearby grass and pick up the nearby wood/stone)you almost certainly won't even see a hostile enemy until you've finished the tutorial and started on your way to the trader you're pointed to; Let alone get jumped by one.

I logged in this morning to play for little bit wondering if they made the single player start better yet. Collected grass and crafted a bedroll. Then it said place the bedroll, looked to my right and there was a trailer so walked for 2 seconds, opened the door to place the bedroll and dog comes up from behind and attacks. I was playing as if a new player in a new single player game.

You entered a POI, which as mentioned, breaks spawn protection. Zombies and enemies spawn in POI's; So if you enter one, they start spawning.

Also..Most new players, the ones I've seen at least, drop the bedroll at their feet and move on into the rest of the tutorial. It's fairly rare (again, in my experience) for them to do something besides that.

Most new players dont even really know WHY they're crafting a bedroll, or what it does; And so do not think 'i should put this in a safe place since I'll spawn on it, oh look, a building ill go put it there'.

I never left like a 5 meter radius of my spawn. Told to get grass fibers and started punching grass, maybe a new player would not know to do that, then crafted the bedroll while rotating to look around, it then said to place the bedroll and putting it in a structure is not far fetched veteran player level thinking imo. Take note of it or deny it; up to you guys.
