Can't Find Coal
Been digging around under the plains biom foever and i haven't hit a single coal vein. Always have trouble with coal. Is it in with the iron and gravel or seperate. Been digging throgh ALOT of gravel. about 60 blocks below biom serface now so any input on depth would also help

Don't burnt trees or campfires produce coal, albeit in small quantities?

No offence but are you sure you are in Plains? I know I got it confused first time I went looking to set up a coal mine.

Also, it might help a little, but did you know you can hit those charred/smoldering ember piles with an axe to get coal?
In your journal there's a topic about "mining".

You can also (by chance) find coal in boulders.
I have found coal in many biomes, it's just a search. I usually dig straight down to bedrock, exploring every sand area I hit. Once at bedrock I will dig out in a direction and when I hit sand I dig it out and see what minerals are associated with it.

SAND is the key. Find sand and you will find something else.

But you may have to DIG A LOT to find a good sized deposit of anything like Nitrate, Coal, Lead. Success varies, but it is random.

I have found all resources in most biomes, so that canard about nitrate in snow is false. Same with coal in plains and so forth. Those are all false. Just do a lot of digging.

LOTS of DIGGING

Is the obvious "smash some rocks and you'll get some" too tedious? Get some sweat going! ;)

^This^

Is where you will find above ground Coal deposits.

Well, I'd suggest going to the burned area and just chop up burning sticks. Can chop up the old fire place burnt logs too and get some coal in a pinch.
i know the basics what bioms to find what ore and yes i am sure i'm in plains. built a base on the intersections of snow dessart and plains so i could get anlmost everthing i needed from one mine. getting a bit from above ground deposts and the few super small viens i found. but that only add up to about 3000. found alot of gravel but no coal in it
