Feature Request: Sharpen Filter CAS
Hi SteamVR Devs,

There are several requests, back to Oct. 2019 for a sharpening filter in SteamVR.
Please check:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/250820/discussions/4/1628539187758698045/
https://steamcommunity.com/app/250820/discussions/4/2970649384355872766/

Why has this been ignored until today and one and a half after the first request has not been integrated yet?

I mean honestly now, the SteamVR dev team should be genuinely interested in integrating reshade CAS sharpening filters or something similar into SteamVR and not continue to ignore this feature request.

And let's face it, if a single guy like Patrick can accomplish this, don't really want to tell me that a big contender like Valve is not able to have this integrated after such a long time.

I play virtually every VR game, where it is possible with an activated sharpen filter, because it brings much more compared to SS, whether DR2, PCars2, AMS2, ACC, ETS2, ATS, Project Wingman, Skyrim and many more, these games look worlds better than without sharpen filter. With sharpen filter and SS, almost every VR game can look like HLAlyx. Perfect, sharp, the way it should be.

For me to be allowed to do that, I mean play sharp and not blurry, I have to tinker around for hours and bash my way through forums to customize each VR game individually.

Well, now a friend has seen how sharp everything can be in VR and wants me to configure all his games so that they also look as ultra-sharp as mine in VR. Well I have full no interest in it, was a huge job until everything ran so ultra-sharp.

But it should not be a big job to play sharp and not blurry. I should be able to say to my friend, hey, move the sharpness slider up a bit, like 150% or 200%, and then you too can play ultra-sharp in VR.

Hey Dev Team, really now it is a small slider for the sharpness control in SteamVR! If Patrick can do that, you can certainly also do and implement something similar into SteamVR! And this will really bring an extreme improvement for any VR game. Hey, you can't just keep ignoring that.

And it costs extremely much less GPU power than 400% SS which I can use to play the game in ultra settings with 150% or 200% SS. So now the question, why hasn't this been implemented already?

I mean, I play almost every game ultra-sharp on an Index Valve, but many of your users play in an unsharp mode because they don't know it can go ultra-sharp with a sharpening filter. So that every game can look as sharp as HFAlyx. Do you really want your loyal VR users to have to play blurry games because for some reason you don't want to integrate that, even though every game could look sharp too?

Really, I don't understand why this can't just be configured via a very, very important slider in SteamVR.

And I don't understand why I had to tell my friend that he'll just have to live with continuing to play his VR games with blur. Although, VR could be so much different and so much more amazing with a sharpen filter.

And the sharpness slider should be individually adjustable per game. Just like the settings for 80/90/120 and 144Hz should actually also be individually adjustable per game, but until now it only can be set globally.

Thanks and best regards,
FS

Hi SteamVR Devs,

It's been 6 months since I opened this thread, and I wanted to ask you again if you could consider my request for a sharpening filter for SteamVR?.

I've been using a CAS sharpness filter for over 4 months now which costs next to no GPU resources and makes the image in VR extremely improved and sharper, and it works with almost any Steam VR-Title I have tested.

We VR users are generally somewhat disadvantaged by the blurriness in VR compared to 4k/8k monitors where everything is sharp. The software technology to also experience VR in sharp is there and works with any HMD.

I would really like to ask you to take a closer look at the topic and request for the integration of a sharpness filter and you will find that a feature of this kind brings a huge enrichment for all those who use VR more and more, because it offers the pure immersion to experience games and applications that were just flat before.

I currently use the VRToolkit CAS sharpness filter from Retrolux (Github at: https://github.com/retroluxfilm/reshade-vrtoolkit/releases ). This works with almost every Steam VR title and makes these titles appear sharp and crisp down to the smallest detail in some cases, without putting much strain on GPU resources.

It would be a huge enhancement if a CAS sharpness filter could be integrated into SteamVR so that GPU resources could be used for gameplay in ultra settings rather than SS.

If you have ever played a title in VR and then play the same title with a sharpness filter (e.g. VRToolkit) then you will have to notice and experience for yourself how much the sharpness matters in a title like DR2, ETS2, SkyrimVR or Project Wingman and any other game, even Half-Life: Alyx looks a bit better than it already is.

I unfortunately have a bit of a feeling that this thread is being neglected, or am I really the only VR user who finds that just about every VR title somehow has a blur filter over it that you have to manually remove?

So this thread would primarily be for the SteamVR developers to try out a sharpening filter themselves, only to find out (as I did once), WOW, really now, before the sharpening filter the game already looked a lot, lot blurrier. And then you just want to play that way.

Now I start again:
+1 for a sharpness filter that does not cost a lot of GPU resources and brings a lot of sharpness to every VR title without having to install it manually for every game.

+1 as it would certainly make it easier when something with a similar sharpening/clarity adjustment dial would be integrated in SteamVR directly. ;)

Yes, for me and probably many other VR users it would be a great improvement to SteamVR.

And very nice to see the creator of the VRToolkit plugin here and a big thank you for the time and effort you put into creating VRToolkit.

Now I've (horribly?) already reached the point where I don't play flat games anymore and if it's a flat game anyway, then only in vorpX. And one WOW after another, Batman, Bioshock, Dishonored, Ori, Trine and most other titles are in vorpX just incredible. Just like DR2, AC, ACC, PCars2, Moss and any other native VR games in conjunction with VRToolkit.

I can't even imagine playing a VR game without VRToolkit anymore because it makes such an extremely big difference in playing VR games.

From me you get an extremely big +1000  thank you for making it possible with your plugin that all these immersive VR games that exist to date look really, really crisp in my Valve Index.

For me vorpX is as indispensable as VRToolkit! I can only repeat myself once again:

T H A N K Y O U !
