It uses the oculus quest interface for the most part, but it is definitely supported by SteamVR.
I didn't pay the $80 U.S. for the official link cable. I got one for $35 on Amazon and and it works great (plus, does not require the adapter I think you need with the official cable if you don't have a USB C port on your motherboard).
I will say that the experience with the off brand link is perfect so far (just had it a few days. Also, if your weighing headsets, after playtesting games on valve index, which was fantastic, I have no regrets going with Quest 2. The Index was undoubtedly a nicer set up, but for double the price for the entire package the Q2 is the bargain all the reviews are saying it is. The gaming experience is nearly identical (in fact, better resolution on the Q2).
Here's the link the cable listing I picked up that I can vouch works with the Q2.

With the Link cable to your PC, it does support any VR game you can download on Steam. Anything on Steam and Anything on the Oculus store. But you can only download Oculus supported games on to the headset's storage to play wirelessly. Anything else requires the PC link cable.
There's a VIRTUAL DESKTOP app for the OC2 that apparently allowed you to play wireless with Steam Games. I bought it for $20.00 only to find they patched the functionality out (I THOUGHT it was on the Oculus side though, not the Steam side). It still allows you to use the headset to work on the standard desktop, but it doesn't permit running of the games in VR though. Gotta have the wire. In the post earlier in this thread I linked to a cable that works great that's less than half the cost of the "Official" Oculus link cable.
Now, there is some sort of unsupported firmware or software patching you can do to apparently still use the OC2 wireless with Steam, but after reading all the articles and instructions on it, along with the mediocre results of people doing wireless play in general, it didn't seem worth it. The only wireless I do is with Oculus native applications that you can load directly in to the headset. They work great.
