Lugaru vs Overgrowth Lugaru Campaign
I have just finished the Overgrowth Lugaru Campain and was wondering if anyone here has also played it.

If anyone else has, could you tell me which one is better overall? I heard that there were some features in the original that are not in the "remake".

Thanks

WARNING: THERE WILL BE SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE LUGARU CAMPAIGN

I personally prefer the original version of the Lugaru campaign, since Overgrowth's gameplay is not yet finished, and there were a lot of unnecessary changes to the story that leave out and severely alter some important details.

  1. There's a lot of moves that are just plain left out. There's no horizontal Leg Cannon (rabbit kick) in Overgrowth, no Spinecrusher (a killing suplex move), no Wall Kick, no throat stab, no crouch stab, and possibly the most baffling, no Animal Run (which was a four-legged run that could tackle opponents). Dodging and knife-throwing have also been made far less effective. The lack of attack variety actually limits the gameplay an awful lot.
  2. The ending was severely wrecked: the original Lugaru ends with Turner deciding that he isn't fit to be King, and leaving the Rocky Hall to find a new purpose in life, while Overgrowth's version ends very abruptly with Turner asking what cats are, just to set up Overgrowth's campaign... it's very awkward compared to the original and provides no closure.
  3. The characters were altered, too. Willow was originally a dude named Jack, and had different motivations. Skipper didn't die in the original campaign, and was actually an unwitting pawn in Jack's scheme, and the Alpha Wolf had a different personality altogether.
  4. Turner was significantly less bloodthirsty towards the Wolves in the original Lugaru, and he also staged a bloodless coup to take control from Hickory instead of challenging him to a duel, though he had to kill him later anyway.
  5. Also, Aspen had stolen Turner's personal armor in the original Lugaru. Overgrowth just left that out completely.

Not to mention, Overgrowth version is easier, less enemies in the levels and less fights overall. For ex: famous 3 wolves locaction in Lugaru. It's only 2 in Overgrowth version. Eh...:turnerfacepalm:

And then there's the fact that wolves don't grab you out of the air anymore, so they have no defense from the overhead Leg Cannon at all... but they're immune to all melee attacks that AREN'T the Leg Cannon. That means the only option to deal with them is jump on their heads repeatedly to win. It's highly limiting, considering the nature of the game, and certainly not fun at all.

Glad you guys liked Lugaru! :)

We're working on improvements to those things in Overgrowth combat. The improvements we're making won't clone Lugaru's combat (since Overgrowth is not intended to be a Lugaru "remake"), but it should make wolf encounters, and general combat, more fun.

If you own Overgrowth, and feel like testing our combat improvements while we're working on them, and giving (constructive) feedback, then I recommend joining the Wolfire Discord: http://discord.gg/wolfire

The elephant in the room being the fact that there is a de-facto Lugaru remake in Overgrowth - called Lugaru - which we are in fact discussing.

It's not really an elephant in the room. Your preference is plain and clear. Plus, this is the Lugaru discussion board, so of course people are going to really like this game :)

Regarding Overgrowth, we do take all feedback seriously, and make sure to read and evaluate all of it, even if we don't directly implement every suggestion from every player.

If you want to check out the new changes, they're on internal_testing (which is publically available), and they're still ongoing. If not, then carry on!

None of that has anything to do with what I was just saying, actually. I was referring to your claim that "Overgrowth is not intended to be a Lugaru remake" when there's a Lugaru remake in it, plain as the nose on my face. Any semantics aside, the remake definitely exists.

Yes, which is why this comment exists on one of your Youtube videos, regarding some negative feedback you were getting about Overgrowth that was deleted, despite not containing any sort of disrespectful language or conduct:

I appreciate it when a representative of a company takes the opportunity to speak to their consumers, but not when the representatives speak with open dishonesty.

I apologized on that thread, and said I wouldn't do it again. Don't really know what else to tell you regarding that.

I'm also not here to argue with you. I'm here to say that we want feedback on the game, specifically because we're working on combat right now.

If you're angry that I replied, sorry to anger you. You're entitled to your opinion.

I'm pretty sure I made it clear it was the dishonesty of the reply that angered me, not the fact that any particular person made the reply. It's not my opinion that this thread is directly comparing an original game to it's remake: the new Lugaru campaign is a remake by the exact definition of the word. Sure, the comparison is a completely subjective one, but the existence of the remake itself is not.

Yeah, I understand now, and your point is totally valid. There's a remake in the new game. We didn't change the combat mechanics to match Lugaru in that campaign, and there are big differences. I wasn't attempting to be dishonest, I just lost context of the thread. I read it as comparing the whole game, and not just the remake. I'll take this opportunity to stop hijacking the thread now!
