Are there random dungeons?
I've started twice now, and each time I get the same basic entrance to the dungeon.

Did you even get past the entrance?
Hey Maupin, yes it is definitely generated, but some "chunks" are predefined.
Once you've got a few hours within the game, you'll clearly see that you won't venture the same maps all over again.

Each time I started, I got a dungeon with some waterfalls, an unavoidable pool of lava I had to cross through, and a room with a trapped red orb that summoned many monsters as soon as I took it.

It sounds to me like you are in the tutorial level. Which to your suspicions is not random. Grabbing the orb and dying in the tutorial level is a scripted event. You must grab the orb and die for your game to continue. After that you will be placed into the camp where you will be able to start your first run. I hope that helps clear things up.

So once you've completed the tutorial level (up to the level where you die and are floating in space), it should be random again?

I've done that and am now in the camp (with a scroll and item vendor, a bard, a philosopher or something, and a dungeon entrance with big arches), but every time I enter the dungeon I arrive in the exact same four levels.

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking here. I'm going to assume you're talking about the dungeon layout but feel free to correct me if I am wrong. The map is made up of chunks and certain chunks are designated to be entrance chunks and those are the only types of chunks you can spawn in when you enter. You can't just spawn into any chunk. The dungeon layout and everything else is randomized though.

Ah, got it. Perhaps the fact that dying is unavoidable and it's a tutorial level should be mentioned somewhere? I'm used to permadeath in my roguelikes so every time I died, I restarted.

That's correct; I'm finding that the dungeon layout is the same every time I enter it.

The map is made up of chunks and certain chunks are designated to be entrance chunks and those are the only types of chunks you can spawn in when you enter. You can't just spawn into any chunk. The dungeon layout and everything else is randomized though.

I get what you mean here. The game did work like that when I played it in early access: individual rooms would repeat, but the large-scale arrangement of rooms was different ever time I played.

However, as of the latest update (1.01, I think?), Floor 1 has the exact same layout. It also repeats the same items -- e.g. a Pushing Sword in an upstairs obilesk room, and a Flamberg in a secret chamber off the slime room north of the entrance. The same is true for the next three floors, but I don't know what happens after that as I haven't yet survived to reach the surface after getting the orb.

Having said all this, it sounds like I'm having a different problem to Maupin. Do you want me to start a new thread?

I can provide system details (I'm on Ubuntu 16.04) and screenshots if you need them.

@httiqs Hmm that's not what I thought it was at all. That is strange that you are getting the same dungeon and I can't think of a reason that it won't randomize after you die. I wouldn't have any idea on it but maybe someone else might know why.

I've sorted this out now. It turned out I had two mods installed (Dungeons of Falore and BurdBurd's Expanded Dungeons. I turned both of them off and immediately got a new properly-randomised dungeon.)

I'm now back to enjoying the Delver 3D rogue-like experience :-)
