New to Tropico 5....
I started the first campaign, and when I declared independence, the game started me over on the second island, but I still seem to be a governor, the crown gives me orders and sends money. My infrastructure is gone, but my dynasty is still there. Is this how it's supposed to be?

That's how the campaign is played, you are jumping through time controlling different islands in different time periods...

So, having a revolution doesn't mean you have a revolution, it's just the end of a scenario?

For the sake of the campaign, yes, you're just finishing levels when you meet a goal. I mostly thought of the campaign as a tutorial.

When you play Sandbox you have to find a way to declare independence or you lose the game if you start in the Colonial Era, and you keep playing through each era on the same island until you lose, reach a goal (if you set any in the options), or give up on the run.

Okay, that makes sense.
I mean, other than the part where a 'tutorial campaign' has different mechanics than the rest of the game, that are not explained.

First of all it's not a tutorial, that's just his (very strange) opinion, when the campaign takes easily 50 to 100 hours to complete.

Sandbox is not "the game" it's a fish bowl with no actual goals and no purpose.

Also, it is explained, if you actually pay attention to the story during the campaign you are very clearly told how you are jumping through time and controlling each island at different points in history. Perhaps it's easy to miss if you aren't listening, but every mission of the campaign is a clearly explained point in time and then your purpose is revealed as you develop time travel.

Not to mention that the two Island you'll be hopping in between get reused in the next scenario, so it's basically Island A - Island B and then Island A or B (you can choose which one you'll want to use) and then play the 4th scenario with the remaining one, then again the next two scenarios with either ...

Yeah after getting sent back to the first island I figured out what was going on and just went to sandbox mode.
