I start with the station with the red and blue ships. Grind them up for heaps of steel etc. I made a huge miner out of the reclaimed parts and it was a great start.
Yea guess i have to do that, tried for hours to do it without starter ships ... the frustration is real.
just beware of grinding up ships. Leave the thrusters, gyros and reactors till last so the ship can dampen and doesn't fly off into space.......

If you want to really cheat, you can use some of the mods on the work shop.
1) Super powerful solar pannels, so you never run out of power for you base/capital ship again, especally if combined with over powered battery and a timer block.
2) uranium synasisers that take power and a small bit of uranium and make more uranium.
4) Stone fuel mods, reactors that take gravel instead of uranium to run.
5) Minerial extaction mods that can either produce a range of minerials automatically or convert gravel to a specific minerial via an assembler type device menu, they run on either stone or gravel depending on the mod.
6) use despensor based sensors (example by Keen but has been updated by someone else) to spawn named items then triggered such as 1000 steel plates or 1k iron ore. They can be combined with a piston and timer block to trigger repeatedly for a steady source of materials.

So you could spawn 10k of stone evey minute, refine it in to gravel and convert that in to minerials to build what you want. All powered by a couple of overpowered solar panels. as long as you can power a refinery for 1/4 hour and build a extractor (basically an assembler) and a sensor you can build the rest using the materials produced.

Or just play creative.
On the Load game screen click edit Settings switch to Creative and then once the game is loaded press Shift+F10. Every resource you could want is in the drop-down list at the bottom.
Switch to creative to spawn in some minerals via shift+F10 and then switch back? Maybe spawn in a few ships if you want to as well.
Also once you put the resources in a cargo container, save them as a blueprint then copy/paste however many containers you want. Enjoy a crap-ton of resources.

You could customize a world in creative mode, give yourself "X" amount of resources. You can even build your own "lifeboat" or an exploration ship and even a small home station. Then, just save world, exit out, edit world to change it to survival, save, and then reload.
Somehow managed to get through the beginning with a buddy. But starting in creative to get a little something sounds like a good idea, thanks guys
This mod adds many new blocks to create power, most of them being extremely efficient such as: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=425514695
Nuclear Reactors (Can be attached to ships)
Giant Batteries
Solar Arrays (Framed or Armored, Framed for Stations, Armored for Largeships are most efficient to reduce resource comsumption and/or loss for combat purposed ships)

Just like in real life, keep your nuclear reactors protected, or your ship will be obliterated from the blast if it gets damaged from an attack!

Best thing to do is start on the 'asteroids' map layout. the first field you spawn in has asteroids that will contain all but maybe two of the resources you need.
Sorry for being the necromancer of the moment, but i have to agree that there has to be a way to cheat ores. If i want to play creative but still mind my character's needs, then i cant, unless the game actually allows me to play survival and cheat ores, or maybe its just that i am too used to cheating in survival games for basic needs, but its not like spawning in an easy map is any easier, since you still have to search for the ores, the difference being that you have more stuff you start with
Dr, if I understand what your goal is (not having to chase down resources but still having to worry about O2, fuel, power, etc) then my recommendation would be to start a world with creative, in the world setting of your choice, place a couple cargo containers, use shift+F10 to spawn a chunk of each ore and put them into the containers, and then save and exit, go to load game-->edit setting, change from creative to survival, and then load the game and have fun :)
Dr. Death the best way to 'Cheat' in resources that i know of is by using the SEToolBox by Midspace. You can place almost anything inside any built cargo containers, refineries, assemblers and the like using the tool.
