Aquaria
Metroidvania
I love games like this. Does anyone know of any other "Metroidvania" games available on steam?

"Waking Mars" just appeared on Steam and is pretty similar to Aquaria in terms of exploration.
Do you know if it is better / worse / the same as the iPhone version? I have that one but if it controls better I may get the Steam one. Edited to Add: I guess I could just go check out the Hub over there...

I loved Aquaria, but hated Waking Mars. The animations, controls, sound effects, etc in Waking Mars seems pretty cheap and clunky when compared to Aquaria.
fortune summoner: secret of the element stone, saira, gish and may too giana, but not sure about blade kitten and nyxquest
What i'm looking for is one large connected world where you can find hidden items and power ups that let you enter previously unreachable areas.
so try then fortune summoner and saira.
I actually have Fortune Summoner. It's not a metroidvania type game but it is an awesome one.
Waking Mars is okay, but I'd say CAPSIZED is a better game! If you're looking for a real Metroidvania game, check out Cave Story+ and this upcoming indie game called AXIOM VERGE coming soon to PC and Xbox 360.
Try Bastion. That is award winning indie game which should fulfill your needs for sometime. :)
Darksiders 1 and 2 are also great.

Bastion is a masterpiece. and I actually have Darksiders 1 and 2 (it's starting too look like I have what I want.) I just wish someone would take super metroid, reskin it and give it some hd visuals. I would buy that so hard.

this is probably the closest you'll ever get to what you want Banana: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=93001822

but (incredibly) it still needs to receive more Greenlight votes in order to enter Steam.

Of those games already in Steam your best bet is Dark Souls. It's very much a metroidvania and it's awesome.

There's also Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet and Aztaka, but I found them both to be rather underwhelming due to lack of challenge and excessive hand holding.
Sweet. Apparently already had it upvoted as well.
Try Cave Story +.
