FIX for stuttering/lag (Nvidia and AMD) or even BSOD (with AMD video card). MUST READ!
Here's a fix for lagging and/or game crash (driver crash) and/or blue screens of death.

Note: Credits goes to NoxV ' Uno (his thread with this fix was thrown in the abyss of lost threads lol)

To fix blue screens and/or crashes (driver crash error, etc) :

Now, to fix ingame stuttering/lag spikes when driving, etc.:
  • Step #2 Go to the file path : Docs > My Games > Watchdogs > xxxx
    and find the file "GamerProfile.xml" and open it.

    Look for this line: DeferredFxQuality="console"
    And change it to: DeferredFxQuality="pc"

    Here's an example of how it'll look in the file (thx to Marauderizer for the example idea), the part to change is in bold+underlined text:
    <CustomQuality>
    <quality ResolutionX="1280" ResolutionY="720" EnvironmentQuality="high" AntiPortalQuality="pc" PostFxQuality="high" TextureQuality="pc" TextureResolutionQuality="high" WaterQuality="medium" ParaboloidReflectionQuality="high" DepthPassQuality="pc" VegetationQuality="high" TerrainQuality="high" GeometryQuality="high" LodDitheringQuality="pc" ShadowQuality="high" ShadingQuality="high" RoadQuality="pc" EditorQuality="pc" ParticlesQuality="high" DeferredFxQuality="console" HDR="1" SuperSampling="0" HighPrecisionNormal="1" RenderSplashes="1" RenderRain="0" MotionBlurQuality="off" SSAOQuality="hbao+_low" DepthOfFieldQuality="pc" AntiAliasingQuality="temporalsmaa" id="_runtime" />
    </CustomQuality>

  • Step #3 On steam, in your steam library, right click on "Watch_Dogs" and go to properties then go to "start commands" and enter this: -disablepagefilecheck

    For people not playing trough steam (thx to t77chevy):
    Open game file (where you installed your game, mine is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Watch_Dogs\bin" because I have it trough steam) and find game launch exe file (watch_dogs.exe) then right click and create shortcut onto your desktop. Now right click on that shortcut and select properties. On the shortcut tab, in the "target" box, at the very end after the " put a space
    and write: -disablepagefilecheck
    This is what mine looks like in the target box:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Watch_Dogs\bin\watch_dogs.exe" -disablepagefilecheck
    Click apply. Also, run as administrator, really important!
    Then launch game via shortcut (or this step is useless).

  • Step #4 Once back ingame, put GPU Maxed Buffered Frames to "5" (in the "display" option) and now you should be able to put back your textures to high with MSAA 4x (seems like FXAA would be in fact better), etc. Be wary that the "texture" option (in "display") requires 2 gig of video ram to be at high or 3 gig of video ram to be at ultra. Also, vsync is a ressource hog so turning it off should allow a better performace but may produce screen tearing which is not too bad on smaller size monitors like my 20 inch where I don't see any tearing but can be an issue on bigger ones. Anti-Aliasing also uses a lot of ressources so turning it off should help a lot performance/FPS wise though graphically the game may suffer a bit (though I don't see much difference graphic-wise on my end).

  • if nothing else fixes your lag issues than try lowering certain display/video options that are ressource hogging. For a detailed description of every options, what they do and how heavy it is on the performance, go to (thx BadArseGamer for the link): http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/guides/watch-dogs-graphics-performance-and-tweaking-guide

The game was near unplayable for me the minute I was driving a car cuz there was too much stuttering so I had to put everything at minimum/medium (with an Radeon HD 6970 (2 gigs of vram) and 8 gigs or RAM). After I did those steps though, I can now play with everything at high but with Vsync off and anti-aliasing on FXAA.

Great guide, I'm sure many will find it valuable. It's just a shame that going to lengths like these is what is requried in order to just get the game to work properly.
Thx, I just hope many more see my thread instead of spamming forum topics "laggin' HALP!"

Just want to add that you should make sure you completely uninstall drivers using the AMD Clean Uninstall Utility [forums.amd.com]. I just uninstalled with windows and had some issues updating to the beta drivers and was unable to play in full screen as a result.
hmm, that would probably be in "propreties" (when you right click on the exe) but I can't say exactly how :/ sorry

I use "Driver Cleaner DDU" (http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=379505). Works perfectly. If your PC after installation "hangs", installed the ATI AHCI driver NOT. This has helped me.
